Car Travel immediately after a hip replacement

Posted , 12 users are following.

My 83 year old father broke his hip on holiday in Scotland. He lives in Devon. The insurance company who originally mentioned both air ambulance and private ambulance to us as methods of getting him home are now suggesting that he could travel the entire distance of over 500 miles by taxi. This seems totally absurd and potentially very dangerous for a man in his condition less than a week after surgery. Would love to know what the usual medical advice regarding travel is?

Many thanks

HA HA! That's ridiculous. It would kill him.

Maybe get the surgeon to insist on ambulance travel. Surgeons don't want their patients undoing their work ( I hope) and risking dislocation.

Or you could rent a van, put a proper bed in the back and drive him home yourself! LOL

    Hi,

I personally would not have considered this for myself.Far too long sitting

Even now at 11 weeks post op I wouldn't do this.I seem to remember reading somewhere to break a journey into 2 hour stages but this referred to much later in recovery.Thete should be some information about this on line

    Best wishes

Has has the surgeon and the rest of the hospital team been consulted?

I should think that they would veto the suggestion of a taxi as such a journey would be a great risk just yet.

Hi Sally Is this Axa PPP if so you might as well tear up the whole policy,  I am in the process of suing them through Small Claims Court. They wanted me to fly home to an half weeks after my hip operation which resulted in a complication paralysing  The same leg  from the knee down. I had just spent two weeks in hospital flat on my back, no muscles no balance and they said I could get in a taxi and go home on a plane.

to carry any weight if you decide to pursue this company in court you need to speak to the surgeon who dealt with the operation in Scotland as quickly as possible, asked for his findings on  headed paper and send it to them. Good luck with that if it is Axa. Regards Dot

I haven't had my hip surgery as of yet and I couldn't imagine sitting for that long as is.  I can't imagine that the surgeon would be ok with him taking that trip by car.  I would consult with the surgeon and the physio to see what they say.  Good luck!

I broke my hip while traveling, and dr.said not to be sitting for the 3 hr. Ride home. I was transported by ambulance which was covered by insurance. (InUS). I cannot imagine going by car for that distance and potential danger of blood clots and swelling with legs hanging down.

No way can he travel all that way. I was told I couldn't go on holiday from London to Devon if I had the surgery done originally July last year hol was in Sept. so delayed op. Surgeon was very clear on that. Air travel is out for 3 months short haul due to air pressure and joint could dislocate.

Sitting to long is definitely a no no. Please ask for subacute care in convalesce care . There he can have physio and prepare for his journey home.

i agree with everyone this sitting to long can cause all types of complications. Heck I even got out of jury dirt due to sitting to long.

that was a big positive after THR.
