carbimazole and hair loss

Posted , 3 users are following.

i was diagnosed last year with an over-active thyroid (blood test level was 87). The doctor increased my meds and I am now on 60mg of carbimazole a day. Over the last few months my hair is becoming really thin and is falling out at a ridiculous rate. Its now really getting me down-Im only 23!

Is there any other medication i can try? or do you think the gp will allow me to stop the medicaton and consider an operation?

thanks x

Hair thinning and hair loss can be caused by an overactive thyroid. It may be the imbalance in your hormones and not the carbimazole that is causing your problem.

Hi, I agree with Linda its not the carbs causing hair loss. My hair started falling out when first diagnosed but, once my thyroid levels came down this eased. Elaine.

I was diagnosed with graves disease in june. My hair had been a bit lacklustre for about a year, prob due to the hyperthyroidism.

But it was only after being on 40mg of carbimazole for 4 months, and having reached a euthyroid state, that my hair started falling out.

So to me the hair loss was caused by the medication.
