Carbimazole and weight

Hi

I have today been diagnosed for the 2nd time with an overactive thyroid.

The first was about 6 years ago and I was put on 25mg of Carbimazole a day. Unfortunately my weight went from a 12 1/2S to 16st once I started the tablets. I took the decision to stop them as I suffered from some of the side effects and my white blood cells were being affected. Since stopping the tablets my weight has gone down (from 16st to 9st) and people say I look great.

I have been told today that I should restart the tablets as my T4 is now instead of the norm of 10 to 25 gone up to 70. I am worried that if I start the tablets my weight will go up very quickly. I have all the symptoms, shaking hands, lump in the throat, cant stand heat etc.

Having been in this situation before I am very worried and not sure what to do even thought I have told my doc my concerns re weight gain.

You have to take the tablets I stopped taking them for the same reason and I ended up almost having a heart attack from a thyroid storm.. You don't want that nobody likes to put on weight but it's better then not being here.. Have you spoken to the docs about having the Isotope tablet im having that on the 30th of this month like that I can come off Carbimazole and if I go under active will have to go onto Thyroxine but that much less invasive then Carbimazole.

Ask your doctor about propylthiouracil, it is a different drug that does the same as carbimazole (it's different as for instance it's safe to take during pregnancy whereas carbim is not). You may suffer with similar side effects, or even different ones, but it might be worth a try.

    Good luck x

Hi, Please dont come off meds but, ask for an alternative like kitty has advised. I luckily never suffered with side effects whilst taking carbimazole i only put on the weight i had lost when ill. I am now hypothyroid due to rai treatment & am now on thyroxine hopefully i wont put on weight but, like guest says better to be a little oveweight & alive than skinny but, in your coffin. Take care. Elaine.
