Carers Allowance.

Hello,

I am wondering if I could claim Carers Allowance for caring for my son. I am a pensioner & claim PIP.  No one is claiming Carers Allowance for him.

My son lives with me & claims PIP standard rate care. I do not physically care for my son, but I do care for him with emotional & support care.

thank you so much for your help and advice. I rang Income Support first at DWP, basically read out your post (in my own words) and asked if that was the best situation for us. (It wasn't that I didn't believe you, it was just I'd had conflicting info from them previously) I'd already completed the IS10 they'd sent us and she wanted me to claim by post but I said that I was under the impression we could do it over the phone. John came and did his security check (the normal carry on because he finds it difficult to talk to people on the phone), I then went thru the IS10 with the advisor. When I'd finished with Income Support, I started my call to the Carers Unit whilst actually going thru my application online and cancelling it. I'd just sent the form through and they answered, so I 'officially' cancelled the claim (after 20 questions as to why I was cancelling the claim).

Thank you so much for your advice Denise, I'm just now dealing with our local Housing Benefit office who've had us paying Bedroom Tax for 19 months while I've discovered that there's been a law change and because of my disabilities we shouldn't have to pay it! *sigh*

    regards

You're very welcome. I'm so glad you posted here today. It always make me feel good when i help others and the outcome is possitive.

As for the bedroom tax, having disabilities doesn't automatically exempt you from this unfortunately. There are rules behind it and it also depends on the local councils funding. Good luck with that.

Also, don't forget tha the SDP will be backdated to the date your husband first claimed PIP.  If you haven't already asked for to be backdated them please do ring back and ask this.

Backdated payments may take a little while longer than usual if it's over a certain amount.
