Carers allowance and Carers premium

Posted , 4 users are following.

My Cousin got his award letter today and was awarded Carers allowance from June because he also was claiming JSA this has been deducted as he expected he has now closed his JSA claim and now claims UC with first payment in August

I have two questions the first concerns JSA he signed on Monday and closed claim and was paid Thursday will he get anymore JSA or not

He’s Carers allowance started in June so should he also get the Carers premium backdated to June or not

Thank you for your help

Hi. What do you mean he closed his JSA claim ?

He should still get JSA and carers allowance, the JSA will not be as much as he is claiming carers allowance.

He should get about £90 a week, or monthly with Universal Credit. Because he is a carer he does not have to sign on anymore either. He needs to go jobcentre and make sure both JSA and Carers are on his Universal Credit claim.

    Hope this helps.

Thats incorrect, sorry. You can’t claim UC and JSA. Micks cousin had to claim UC because of being a carer, you will not be excused from job searches when claiming JSA, he had to claim UC.

Mick JSA is paid in arrears which he’s had the payment after he signed on. There maybe a small outstanding payment for JSA, if he receives this then it will be taken out of his UC payment once that starts. UC payments will start from the day he claimed.

The Carers premium for UC is called Carers element and is £156 per month. This will be backdated to the day he claimed Carers Allowance. If he has any further questions then he should ring DWP and ask.
