carpal tunnel pain

Hi im just new to this group and pleased to say ive found this group with people experiencing the same pain as me lol..I had a cortizone injection 2 years ago in my wrist and thought thats fixed that, then in August of this year had to have another one, and since then the pain has been excruciating as what i can explain is as sever cramp like pains mixed with pins and needles. Im now waiting to see a consultant at Newcastle jan 10th where im going to push for the op, but slightly concerned when i see other people are still having problems after theres.

All advice greatly appreciated...

    Hi

Perhaps you want to look at the Facebook page - carpel tunnel surgery recovery. Lots of people on there both pre and post op. Lots of experiences  shared :-)

Um mm. ......I'm not sure, I joined it right at the beginning when Rene  first stared it and now it has about 65 members , all at different stages, it's good to read some of the older posts though and see what different people have gone through.

Hi Dorothy, I also recommend joining the forum. It's all very relaxed with people showing their stitches, wound and recovery program. Others alos post their information from their own Dr or surgeon so you get a broad cross section of slightly different theories and ideas. It does seem that everyone reacts slightly differently to the op. but the majority are so much better by week 6, the first two weeks, until the stitches are out, we all seem to have slightly different experiences, pains and discomfort. You will be pleased to know that most do not even need pain killers, but best to have paracetamol near! There are 50,000 operations in USA alone each year, and it does appear that the vast majority go back to have the other hand done too.

Hi Dorothy, I believe the lady who set it up is Canadian, but it seems to be evenly split between USA, Canada and UK. I only joined after my op. on 18th November and there was only about 10 on the forum. You do need to request to join but will be accepted very quickly; this is just to make it a private group, whatever you write will not be published on your facebook page or go to your friends as they are not members. It does mean we can openly talk about our operations amongst others going through the same things. It really is great to hear that you have the same symptoms as others (but different to others). There is always someone on the forum asking the question you were just thinking! And someone two or three days ahead of you, knowing what comes next. Biggest healer is time, you can assist by finger exercises and arm movements to keep everything active. Single biggest thing is to keep your wrist elevated for 24 hours after the op. Take care.

Obviously, there is lots of chat on the forum, which all members receive (25 emails a day), but when you are fully cured and do not want to continue, you can just "unfollow the discussion/group"; obviously the longer you stay on the more you benefit those that are about to have the op. Even small things that are mentioned help you feel more relaxed. Like, during the op. the surgeon will put a tight band (tourniquet) around your upper arm to restrict blood flow, no-one tells you this until it happens, but if you expect it...well it's not strange, unusual or unexpected when it happens. You feel more in control.

I am seeing the consultant monday- feedback from op and discussion for other hand in jan - forget the tourniquet  next time; I want to be out of it , going to ask for complete arm nerve block!

It seems that regardless of where we are ( except in USA they seem to do keyhole surgery to) that we all have the same questions ( and fears) I can't tell most if the time where someone is from - they're just commenting and asking the same things :-)

And I'm in Cheshire ......where it looks like the heavens are about to open and drip some pretty white stuff.....hand op or not.....The sledge is at the ready :-)

Great Dorothy, just trawl down the group and see the other comments made over the last two weeks. Also there is a tab at the top showing some paperwork on things like finger exercises. After reading others experiences you will feel better and just remember, most people have no problems and don't even go on forums, those with too much time, or worries and concerns, they go on forums. So for every voice there are 50 that do not have any problems at all (or they are very hardy souls!!!).

Yes I guess so..id like to think im quite hardy..but after having a hystetectomy 4 years ago..the pain is nothing compared to the pain that is waking me up at present..ill have a mooch at the notices on fb .:-)
