carpal tunnel surgery post op

I had my surgery  carpal tunnel syndrome 7 weeks ago on my dominant right hand.  My job requires alot of manual handling with adults with learning difficulties and pushing of heavy wheelchairs therefore I am still off work.  I am in constant pain and scar area is solid and tender feels lumpy.  I started physio exercises 2 weeks ago and hadnt really done much before that except wiggle fingers as I had not been given any advice at all post op.  2 weeks ago I couldnt even make a fist or reach my thumb to each finger, now I can make a fist and touch all finders and am using it normally but with alot of pain, more so at night and shooting pains, my grip is extremley poor which worries me after this length of time.  I am scheduled to have my left one done in around 6-8 weeks but I am now considering cancelling as I worry constantly that this will not resume to 100% mobility. Has anyone had this problem after this length of time? and did it improve up to 12 weeks post op?  any reply would be appreciated.

Well I had a disc replaced in my neck, cubital and carpal tunnel release in my left elbow and hand.... A year later I still pain. Especially the wrist, elbow and shoulder. There are even days when the left side of my neck is so stiff my ear hurts. I was off work 8 months and went back as a sitter. Still I have some turning and adls to do with certain patients, and I'm paying for it. My right hand is also affected and the muscle cramps are sometimes unbearable but I'm not gone do any surgery. Sometimes I wonder why I did it on the left arm because I'm still in pain. Paining as I write this.

I am getting an MRI of my neck shortly.  I have shooting pains from my right hand to my neck.  Everyday I wake with terrible headaches and pain from neck to hand.  So after the carpal tunnel surgery; I thought I would be 100% but now I am awaiting an MRI scan.  My doctor believes that real culprit is in the neck area.  Your symptoms are similar to mine.  Please keep me updated on your progress

Hi,  I had the same symptoms in 2008 and was told I had a herniated disk that was impinging on my spinal cord.  After 3 opinions I was told I had to have surgery for neck fusion.  I was out for 6 months.  The neck fusion did fix the pinched nerve in my right arm.

I am still struggling with CTS and Ulna never damage in both my right and left hands.

11 days is nothing. Some occupations take much longer. My surgeon told me I could take a long weekend. He's nuts. I'm an ER nurse I couldn't work for three weeks. And that was pushing it.

Hi Pamela - I had my first carpal tunnel surgery on my dominant hand (R) about 15 years ago. I had no problems with that one, healed great, of course some pain, but I worked in an office at the time. I just had the (L) done 5 weeks ago, I no longer work as I am disabled, but I still help my elderly mother, do housework as possible, blah, blah. I was told after surgery to star2using it slowly and maybe get one oh those squishy street balls to work out with it. Well, my dishwasher broke so it gets enough exercise. What I don't like is that it has woke me up, or kept me from sleeping with such pain I need to ice it. I also still have a lot of numbness and my thumb and pointer finger do not move correctly. I cannot grab, hold or grip things normal. I have tried calling the doc, but missed him twice. I'm going to try again Monday. I guess it was so easy the first time, being younger may have helped. I hope it just takes time for everything to come back to normal! I wish you the best definitely!

I just had bilateral carpel tunnel surgury on Friday February 24th right after I woke up I've been exercising my fingers and even ok at the toilet alone . day 2 bulky wrap came off and continue with more finger range of motion exercise, lots of elevation and ice. I'm not pulling or pushing or twisting. But I am very pleased with my outcome. I am not even wearing splints at night...per Dr. Orders.

So I couldn't imagine holing your fingers still for so long.. hope your recovery has gone good

I had carpal tunnel surgery 5 weeks ago. My thumb is numb and hard and the pain is beyond excruciating to the point where I'm trying to find a doctor to amputate my thumb. Anyone else have this? My thumb was not numb constantly before the surgery.

I had my left one done 12 weeks ago, it healed quickly and I rubbed the scar with E45 cream several times a day, as vigorously as I could. I also began to use the hand as much and as hard as I could, maybe not for everyone but it is now pretty strong. Still have some numbness, was told that will take several months to improve, and the scar is sometimes sensitive to touch, but overall a good result. I think to use the hand as much and as early as you can helped the healing process, but you do have to accept some aching and slight swelling along the way. Good luck
