carpal tunnel surgery post op

I had my surgery  carpal tunnel syndrome 7 weeks ago on my dominant right hand.  My job requires alot of manual handling with adults with learning difficulties and pushing of heavy wheelchairs therefore I am still off work.  I am in constant pain and scar area is solid and tender feels lumpy.  I started physio exercises 2 weeks ago and hadnt really done much before that except wiggle fingers as I had not been given any advice at all post op.  2 weeks ago I couldnt even make a fist or reach my thumb to each finger, now I can make a fist and touch all finders and am using it normally but with alot of pain, more so at night and shooting pains, my grip is extremley poor which worries me after this length of time.  I am scheduled to have my left one done in around 6-8 weeks but I am now considering cancelling as I worry constantly that this will not resume to 100% mobility. Has anyone had this problem after this length of time? and did it improve up to 12 weeks post op?  any reply would be appreciated.

i used bio oil which helped prevent lumpiness on scar - took 4 or 5 months before strength came back to my hand and i lost pain in palm and could touch fingers  to thumb but i have arthriitis in fingers and they curl in - not having left hand done till i have to as fingers curl more on right hand and consultant couldn't say definitely if op has caused this - hope this helps - good luck

Hi, I had carpal tunnel release on my left hand on May 5th, it's been almost 4 months & I'm still having serious problems!!! I did go to therapy without much success. I'm in pain most of the time which I really don't understand. I'm having the same issues you are having. My scar area feels like it's going to split open & it's really tender & lumpy. I'm supposed to have my right dominant hand done also but I'm having second thoughts about going through this again. I'm told that everyone heals at a different pace & to give myself more time. As of now I don't know what to do, I feel stuck. I can't work because my job requires typing on a computer keyboard all day so I've been off since my surgery. So sorry I can't give you a more positive spin but this is where I am. Just wanted you to know you are not alone!!! Good luck & just hang in there. I'm hoping I will wake up one morning & realize it was just a dream.

Hi Mari, I have a friend who is scheduled for an operation at the end of this month. DId you have minimal invasion surgery done or the cut open surgery done? Just curious. Also, are you using any bandaging or other methods of stabilizing? Thanks in advance for the reply. Wishing you a speedy recovery. G

      Hi G,

I had the open carpal tunnel surgery. It's about a 1" cut at the base of my palm. I was told they "scraped the tunnel" not really sure about that but I have a severe case of carpal tunnel so I'm sure they were aggressive. I do have a customized wrist splint which I received after the surgery. It does a great job of stabilizing. Good luck to your friend & thank you for the well wishes!

I just had my surgery last Friday and today went back for my doctor to check it I told the nurse this was the  most painful surgery I had ever had and I have had 7 major surgeries. When my doctor came in he said it was such a small incision it shouldn't havd been painful at all... thisw tokk me by complete surprise since he had given me 40 pain tablets.... usually if he gives any meds at all it is very mild.At any RATE ,I CAN RELATE TO YOUR PAIN AND NOW  I THINK HE MUST HAVE BEEN TEASING ABOUT HOW PAINFUL IT SHOULDN'T BE. i WILL LET YOU KNOW AFTER 12 WEEKS IF MY PAIN IS STILL THERE.

Not sure if I'm replying to the post really just stating my case

I never had typical carpal tunnel symptoms my symptoms were pins and

needles that only occurred when I was using my computer typing or using the mouse

I had my CT surgery on July 26 on my right hand based on the EMG that was the hand that needed it

I've had no side effects from the surgery per se I feel the strength getting back into my right hand the scar is healing well

However I still have the pins and needles and now in addition to having them as a result of using the computer which I've cut down on I also have it after driving reading a book or a newspaper

I still don't have the most common CT symptoms I don't have tingling in my fingers the pins and needles the tingling are in my hands from the wrist down

I'm supposed to have endoscopic surgery in the left hand but after reading all these posts I've decided to wait to see whether the pins and needles are going to continue in my right hand or not

I had the more extensive open surgery on my right hand there is something called a foot mouse I've ordered that I downloaded the Dragon dictation software by Nuance if I move the mouse just move the mouse for half hour more then I start getting the tingling

One last thing I was originally diagnosed with the tingling in my right hand of course I immediately started using the computer my left hand and as soon

as I did that I had the same thing so right now I'm getting tingling pins and needles equally in both hands I really appreciate having discovered this site and have benefited a great deal from all of the sharing

Pamela, I had my surgery over 5 months ago and experience the same problems.  I've been to physical therapy and it didn't help at all.  My hand is still swollen and still not able to grip my golf club.  I have a appointment tp have a follow-up with a nerve specialist. My other hand (left) is also about ready for surgery but like you I'm having second thoughts. I see minimum improvement but it sure is a long process.

Hi All, I had carpel tunnel surgery almost 10 months ago about 6 months after broken femur surgery.  Mine was not my dominant hand but I begged to wait since I was still trying to heal from the femur surgery.  The neurosurgeon told me if I waited I could lose the use of my left hand so basically scared me into going ahead.

I have been compromised for about 15 months now.  My in home care claim has been closed and I am now on disability.  If I try to work my hands with cooking or light household cleaning I am in thumb and wrist pain.  The hand surgery set me back with the leg recovery by 9 months.

My Neurosurgeon said it is good as it is going to get so I am NOT moving forward with the hand surgery on my dominant hand (right).  Please give me hope that I will eventually get the use of my hands back.

The answer, I am afraid, rather depends on getting a proper diagnosis for what your current problem is. Has anyone offered you a diagnosis as such and have any investigations been done?  Dr J Bland

To all of you having trouble with your recovery keep going with your exercises, it will help. Sore scar tissue can be helped with regular massage has anyone tried using a hand cream with Lavender oil added? (1 teaspoon cream 2 or 3 drops of oil) this mix used every day will reduce scarring and keep skin supple, but don't use if the area is inflamed or infected.

I had surgery to my hand today. Hopefully I will fare better.

    Margaret.

Have surgery scheduled for 12-7-16.  Upon reading thru this thread, am rather discouraged that it will help.  I do know I'll be going to therapy after the surgery.  The surgeon seemed to indicate it will be a quick recovery time.  Now wondering if I should postpone until after Christmas holidays as always so much to do.  Any of your experiences and thoughts on this would be appreciated.

    Hello There,

I own a Pet Sitting company and have been walking dogs for 10 yrs now. I developed Carpal Tunnel about 1 yr ago. I had no idea what the hell was happening to me. Numbness, tingling, swelling, waking up in the middle of the night. I lost grip strength pretty rapidly after I was diagnosed. I got to the point that I couldn't even drive and all my dog walks turned into backyard visits....

I've been advised to get Open Release Surgery and I'm terrified. I have been told that I won't be able to pick up more than a piece of paper for the 1st month. I will have to stop my company completely and I've been advised to get both hands done at one time. What is recovery the 1st month like? I'm scared.

    Thanks all.

Hi Lisa;  ask lots and lots of questions, make arrangements for at least 16 visits of Physical Therapy after the surgery.

I would not recommend having both hands done at once and I am shocked the neurosurgeon would even suggest it.  You will not be able to make a fist, grip, lift, flex or put any weight for at least a month.

Everyone is different but my experience did not go well.  Try getting a second opinion.

I agree about not having both done together, my friend did that and found the first few days difficult. But it was at least 'killing two birds with one stone!' Most of the friends I have spoken with all agree that two weeks was about the time it took to get back to normal function, but another couple of weeks before the scar area settled and full grip strength returned. Be positive, it's not as bad as it sounds.

You have been given an extremely pessimistic view there. You can find reliable information on CTS and its treatment on the net. Try NHS choices and my own site and you will get a more realistic picture of the prospects. The only other thing I would say here is don't let anyone railroad you into 'urgent' bilateral surgery without taking at least a few days to learn about the condition and it's treatment. CTS is almost never an emergency like a ruptured appendix - the only exception to that is acute median nerve compression in the context of an injury to the hand and that is clearly not the case here. Don't be scared. First of all they don't do both at the same time and if, for some reason they say they are....DONT!!! The y works but lots of healing time. Everyone is different but the recovery is longer than they say. Relax about it. It will end up being one f the best decisions you will make. You might have more pain and discomfort for a longer period of time in your t hand. Just FYI. Really, you'll be fine.
