Cast is off..........but now there's pain.

Hi all...I wrote 6 weeks ago that I'd just had a cast put on. It was taken off yesterday. The doctor said it will take a week before the pain is gone because it's been kept stiff. Is it really safe to move it around even though it hurts? I find myself preferring to be in the cast with no pain. I do have a walking brace that I'm supposed to take off unless I'm walking. Just wondering if I can snap my bone by moving it around. Guess I don't know how careful I need to be in moving it so soon....Any tips? Thanks. Teri

    1. 28.9.2016 2 fractures fibula hoth proximal and distant ends , cast put on , not operated because ankle was not displaced. (One broken end was with the ankle)

    2. 09.11.2016 cast removed, swelling , stiffness and pain.

    3. 18.11.2016 doctor allowed me to put weight on it. Swelling still there. And pain significantly reduced.

    4. 18.11.2016 Physiotherapy started only up and down of the foot not right and left bending. Blood flow started improving. Swelling started going down.

    5. 22.11.2016 physiotherapist is excersizing the whole leg.

Slowly and not putting pressure. He says its not only the broken bone, the 50 percent job is the muscles and ligaments surrounding the bone. Plus 6 weeks in cast and non weight bearing effects your leg from finger to hip. It has to be strengthened.

25.11.2016 he is slowly streching my muscles and then asks to put pressure , the itching pain that comes from insude of the ankle is not because of the bone and comes from the muscles is going away. Swelling sognificantly reduced.

All this time , with and after the cast. I had kept my foot raised straight, bought a recliner at the office . Used to raise it above heart level and maintain position at least 20 - 30 times a day.

Bone and muscles repair best when you dont put your foot down

Still limping and walking with support stick but feeling better. Dips in warm water , not hot water also helps. Massage with olive oil also helps and improves blood flow. Will keep you posted.

Hi everyone, you all sound like your going thru your own things recovering from surgeries, etc. I had my surgery to redo my foot on December 8, out of the cast on Friday, no weight bearing for 4 weeks. Still on the scooter, can't stand in the shower, sitting in the bottom of my moms shower is fun-NOT! More plates and screws on each side, and a little pain every now and then. Doing really well!!

      Hi girl

This is probably mainly to do with the muscles going into spasm after having your cast of try head patches and to slowly start using your ankle but not properly walking just stretching it and etc..... and then start doing a few walks at a time and slowly it should ease the pain but it will be painful for a while sorry hun

My 2yrs old niece 3weeks cast had been removed. But there is an intact black eschar on her heel. Is anyone here have the same problem? sad

Unfortunetly that does happen it's not rare but it is unusual I suggest you tell your niece to be carful and just watch her just in case it gets work so slight physio nothing to much and if it doesn't improve speak to a doctor

My injury was 2 months ago, broken fibula and my cast was removed 3 weeks ago and the x-rays showed that the fracture line hasn't sealed yet. My doctor ordered me to with a cam boot, bit I still use the crutches cause the first week pain was unbearable. I cant walk with one crutch cause my foot feels stiff on the ankle area and if i try to make like a squat movement i cant do it my foot doesn't bend it feels hard and i feel comfort. I feel fear that i wont be the same as before. Any advice before depression takes over me.

Don't sqat honestly that's one of the worst things to do it causes more pain than it does actually help..... keep wearing the boot and do slight movements as you can handle also when you go back to the hospital ask for a ct skan or cat skan they tend to help you see any hidden damage.... also ask for a ankle splint they tend to help so much more as you can walk on r but it supports your ankle a lot..... u do need physio which you can do yourself start with ankle movements up and down and in circles and things like that and in like 2/3 weeks start with the squats if the pain has gone down..... hope you feel better done xx

Oh bless you !!!   having a break  is the worst thing i have ever  !!!  and i have two plates and screws so will not break again  but now 9 months on , walking which is a miracle with the 3 breaks and dislocation , 5 wks  and plaster off  and hadnt blinking healed.

I never had a walking boot as not here in Malta do they provide so had  to buy some old ladies slippers  and use  10 per ceny of body weight !!!  eeeek !   on a zimmer then crutches  then 1 crutch  then on my own.

Still tight, sore, and painful , more some days than others , still have a daily foot massage x twice  by  my partner   with pain releif cream ( Volterol)  or with Bio Oil   to help the skin look a better color  and very scarred  down my leg both sides  and this so helped to loosen the scar, but hate touching it even now, soooo  not normal yet,

If i have a lot of discomfort i have an anti imflamity powder after food  and have a pain free night and day.

I wish  you well and  feel your pain  and keep excersizing the foot  and get some massaging done  it so helps.   Good luck honey , i cant walk with no shoes on  to date !!!!

Broke my fibula 4 weeks ago but didn't need surgery since all fragments were aligned. Got my cast off and was given a walking boot which is giving me more pain than the cast. I still cannot bear weight for another 3 weeks but at least I can take a shower and use my jazzuzi. I can't wait for hard callus to show on x-rays so I can start rehab... The more I wait, the more rehab I will need. When I take the boot off, the ankle is like jello... No muscle at all.. It's so weird. I'm 42 years old btw... Hope the best for everyone here...

    Hi

I know you guys were on this forum 3 yrs ago, but I was hoping to ask some questions... I'm going on 10 wks post op from ORIF broken fibula and I'm having terrible nerve pain. I have burning pain on top of my foot and toes and some "awakening of muscles" pain arch of foot and leg. Ugghh just wondering if that seems normal? It's so bothersome I can't do much of anything. Help! Any recommendations or advice? I've tried ice elevation all the way to PT and therapy pool classes for mobility, etc. thanks in advance

Hi Teri, I am just into 1st week I had my tripple fusion ankle surgery. Need your help to know if it's normal to feel too much weight of stone cast on ankle even if you are laid down or is this unusual? Too much frustrated with that!

I have a walking boot on for the last month. Sometimes I walk short distances without it and I notice I have pain on the top of my foot. I had the same thing happen after my first ankle surgery but it went away after awhile once I could walk again. I'm thinking maybe because the bones retract a bit from not walking and it takes time to stretch out. I'll ask my doctor next week. Hope you doing well now!
