Cataract

I got cataract and started to get worse. I went to the clinic but they couldn't measure the lens as its too thick clouded and they said they are referring to the hospital. I am bit worried whether they can rectify this. Can someone advise the way out of this?

My doctor has had problems using the machine that shows the parachute and used some backup methods also. I am not sure what the backup methods were.

    Two thoughts:

    1. First and I can not stress this enough; make sure you are using a Top Opthmalogist not someone you just picked out a phone book (yes I know they are extinct) or a neighbor recommended. I want an Opthamalogist who is involved in clinical trials, publishing articles and ranked highly by other Opthamalogist, check out Castle Connolly Top Doctors. Yes there can be a super terrific doctor that does none of that, but how do you know. I like doctors that are involved in clinical trials because manufactures want to get the best outcome possible, so they are doing the qualification research for you as they are picking the best doctors for their clinical trials.

If you are in the US, what state are you in. I or someone else might have recommendations for you.

    1. Find an Opthmalogist who uses the Optiwave Refractive Analysis system or similar machine to check refractiveness during surgery after the cataract is removed. Ideally they will be using this to refine or verify the before surgery numbers.

There are two basic parts of the eye that determine your vision. One is the lens which is the part that develops a cataract. It is essentially a cloudy growth in the lens. The other part that determines vision is the cornea or outer surface of the eye. The curvature and shape of the cornea plus the lens shape normally determines your vision and the amount of correction it needs. With cataract surgery the lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens. So any error in the lens is gone, but it must be replaced with an artificial lens that has to correct for any error in the cornea. To determine the lens power needed for a cataract surgery they do not need to know the error in the lens because it will be removed. They have instruments to measure the 3D shape of the cornea and with a computer program determine what power of a lens you need.

    .

The short story is that unless there is something more than a cataract there should be no problem for them to determine what lens you need for the cataract surgery. A cataract surgeon will have the instrumentation to do the measurements.

You need to see a surgeon that specializes in cataract surgery. If the UK is like Canada there can be a fairly long wait to see the cataract surgeon.
