Cataract newbie

At a Paula Carr eye examination yesterday, I was told that I had cataracts.

I have made an opticians appt to start the ball rolling regarding getting treatment. Sadly, it will be well over a month before that appointment.

I know very little about the condition, but have had the details of the operation explained to me in detail.

I have a question...... Can cataracts go away without treatment, or is it only an operation that can sort them out?

I now have a date for assessment and will probably have the first op two weeks later, assuming Covid doesn't delay these appointments as the NHS in the UK is cancelling lots of routine ops etc to allow staff to concentrate on Covid vaccinations.

    I have a question.....

After the first op, assuming all goes well, will I get the benefit of much improved vision after a few days or so, despite my other eye having a cataract? Or will need to close the eye with a cataract?

    Any advice greatly received.

The reason, I ask, is that I am being offered a job that will involve a lot of computer use to input important data. At the moment, I am having to get very close to the screen and still struggle to see it sufficiently.

I read this after my prior post. You should be seeing better within a day or so. If you currently wear glasses, you simply take out the lens for the operated eye. Doctors usually don't give a prescription for new glasses until 4-6 weeks later because your eye takes that long to fully heal. (FYI: I live in the U.S.)

I only wear glasses for driving, or used to, as they are no good to me currently.

I have given up driving for the time being.

Just been outdoors and I can barely see 15 metres before everything gets blurred.

My cataracts are advancing at an alarmingly fast rate. I do wonder if I might be close to blind by the time I get my assessment in March.
