Cataract operation with tremor.

I have had essential tremor for many years and just live with it.  I do not need to say how stress makes this condtion much worse.  I recently had an eyesight test which came below the limit for driving.  Cataracts are the cause so i will need an operation on my eyes if I wish to continue to drive.  Naturally I am very concerned that,  as cataract operation is carried out with local anaesthetic, that i will shake while this is being performed.   Someone said that I will have to have a general anaesthetic but my GP says that he has never heard of anyone having a cataract operation with a 'general'.   He thinks the eye surgeon will paralise my eye and face with an injection.  Sounds awful and I am scared enough already.  I cannot find anyone who has had a cataract op. who has tremor.   I have my first assessment on my eye condtion next month. Any info. most gratefully received.

Hi Grete, I have dystonia and tremors so when I had a cataract operation I was given a general anesthetic at Northampton hospital. It means staying overnight in hospital.

Thank you Alison.   Interesting.  So they DO give a general anaesthetic to people with tremor for the cataract op.

    Hi,

I have had essential tremor since I was 23 years old and I am 56 years old now. As I grew older the symptims got worst. Both my dad and his dad also had essential tremore and most of my siblings have this problem but theirs don't seem to be as bad as mine. It is mainly effecting my hands mainly left hand but strangley sometimes it switches from one to another and sometimes they are both as bad. This problem as you know it is very frustrating and embarrassing specially when you are socialising. This problem is effecting my writing and most times I have to pick up a cup or a glass with both hands.

Anyhow, few months ago I read this article: online

and I decided to give it a try. I bought one magnetic copper bracelet to start and saw a differnce in my hands within few days and then increased it to 5 magnetic bracelets. I can write now! I couldn't do that before and I can pick up a glass easire than before. All in all my hands are 50% improved from what they used to be. I just wanted to share that with you. You can finf the bracelets online very easily and I suggest that you buy the ones with strong magents.

There is also a much better treatment in my opinion and that is a new technic which has been developed during the last 10 years and that is a non-invasive ultrasound for brain surgery. It started in Switzerlands and then USA and now Imperial college Healtcare NHS trust are using this technic. It seems to be very safe and effective straight away. It reduces the symptims by 80%. Here are some links for you to study:

The treatment seems to be at it's final stages of trial and hopefuly will be available to public soon.

I just wanted to share these information with you as I just know so well as to how frustrating and depressing this problem could be. Hope these information could benefit your health.

Thank you Dariush.  I have not heard of magnetic bracelets helping Essential Tremor but will definitely give this a try.  Anything to calm down this incessant tremor.   I have heard aboutt Ultrasound but it is a huge thing to undertake and with risks I imagine.   Certainly a treatment to think about.  Thanks again.
