cataract surgery

I am getting my first eye done in June then the other one done in September. At the moment I wear varifocals. Will I have to buy new  glasses after my first eye gets done then another pair when I get the second eye done.

Hi Mary I also wear varifocals & had my eye done in March. They based my new lens on my current specs, so that I can see adequately until I get a prescription for new specs.

I had my other eye done a long time ago.

I have an appt tomorrow so I will see whether I will get a new prescription.

    Good luck with your op

    Mary,

My surgeon had a replacement lens made while I was in surgery getting my first cataract removed. If they have a lab where you are having your eyes done... they will probably do the same for you. It was included in my Symfony plan, at no extra cost.

I too wore varifocal glasses before surgery. In addition, I have astigmatism  which catract surgery doesn't correct. So, I already knew in advance I would still need to wear glasses after surgery on both eyes, but with an entirely new perscription. In my case, I waited until the second eye was done before seeing an optometrist and ordering my new glasses. The way I handled this was to remove one lens from my old glasses after the first catract surgery. I looked a bit weird for the month or so inbetween the first surgery and the second surgery, but functioned fine. After the second surgery, I also had to wait several weeks for that second eye to adjust and  "normalize". I was without any glasses for that time but my vision was pretty good, about 20/50. Then I went to the optometrist and got fitted for new glasses. It took a few additional weeks wearing the new glasses for my eyes to adjust and "settle down", but my vision has never been better. I'd estimate that the total amount of time from my first surgery to getting the new glasses and my eyes totally adjusting to them was a liitle over 4 months.

    Hi Mary,

I'm in a similar position to you. My first operation is scheduled for early July, I don't yet know when the next one will be. I've been told by my consultant that they will insert a distance lens in my first eye and I've to think what I want for the 2nd eye, either distance, near or intermediate. In order to decide I've ordered a months supply or contact lenses to mimic the various choices.

The consultant said not to get new glasses until at least 2 months have passed after the 2nd eye gets done, considering my varifocals cost over £700 I'm inclined to agree. If I can tolerate contacts then I'll stick with them until both eyes have been done.

    Good luck with your op.

If your first eye gets corrected in June you could remove one lens from your glasses temporally untill the second eye gets done.

The solution of removing one lens in the glasses will work if the prescription in the remaining eye is small i.e. less than about 1.0 D (which most probably it is not). Otherwise, the difference in the prescription for the 2 eyes may result in too much of a difference in the image sizes received by the brain that it may cause symptoms like double vision.

An inexpensive and simple partial solution (assuming that the first eye is set for distance) may be to buy ready-made reading glasses available in stores to be able to read while waiting for the second eye surgery. There may be other simple solutions, which don't use varifocals, but  can still provide reasonable vision without too much inconvenience.

After getting my first eye done, I just took the lens out of the side of the glasses that was done and wear them that way.   Having said that, I must say I won't go out of the house looking like that so you may want to buy another pair.   I wore multifocal contacts as well and with one eye done, I really feel a little out of sorts.
