Cataract surgery after detached retina long ago ?

Am trying to research the prospects of cataract surgery after a torn retina op.

I'm 75 - have been diagnosed as having cataracts in both eyes which are now producing a dirty film over vision rather like dirty glasses. Still good vision with glasses but worried about deterioration. And considering cataract surgery.

I was advised by a Western Eye Hospital consultant that one eye presents a problem for surgery because I had a torn retina and the associated op in Moorfields at least 12 years ago. Am still confused here. I don't think surgery is out of the question, but is, I understand, particularly risky.

I have had difficulty researching this - loads of general cataract vids on youtube but cant find any on this special case - so would be grateful for 1) any links to informed material 2) personal experiences of this condition 3) advice 4) are one's chances better if one goes privately to a top eye surgeon, or does pulbic/private not make much difference?

Many thanks for any help.

Hi. Im 68, had a torn retina about 13 years ago. Cataract developed as a result about 3 years ago. After continuously changing glasses to accommodate it, decided to get cataract sorted about 15 months ago. Brilliant, in all senses of the word! Wished I'd done it sooner. (UK)

PS: Went privately via my health insurance ( I pay 25%), at local eye clinic with good recommendations, as it was quicker and felt more personal.

If by torn retina, you mean detached retina and repair of it, then yes there seems to be some issues that can be caused by the repair process. One is that the capsule or bag that they lens is in may be damaged and that causes issues in how the IOL can be placed in the bag. The other is that vision in the eye may not be 100%, due to the repair process. Here is an article I found on a quick search. I think the key may be to have the best possible exam prior for evaluation to identify what the complications may be. And if vision issues are anticipated avoid a multifocal IOL.

Many thanks guys for all your responses. V helpful Esp recommend of Moorfields guy who has vg reviews on Lasik eyes incl. s.o. saying he's one of top ten in UK.

Google assistant tells me that cataract ops cost from £1500-£4500 so it sounds like private here may be best option, because it's the only way you can guarantee your surgeon (vs NHS) and the most skilled, safest care. Not worth taking any unnecess. risks with eyes.

I'd still like to know more about the details of the cataract-op-after-torn-retina - you'd think this must be fairly common situation/

Any more info/ recommends v welcome.

    And thanks again.

Retina doctors tend to be different specialists than the ones that do cataract surgery. Perhaps it would be worthwhile seeing a retina specialist for advice first. Perhaps the one that dealt with your eye previously would have the best records on your condition and could provide the best advice and referral.

It's a thought. Thanks. Recommended guy is from Moorfield who also did my retina op long ago. Still like to find more info about the cataract-torn retina combo wh. must be fairly common.
