Cataracts

i had cataract surgery in both eyes about one month ago.

My vision is different, not better. I can see close, but everything ten feet or more is blurry. Driving is difficult. The TV is blurry

....From experience , can my vision get better with time or is this as good as it's going to get?

Hi Mary jo... did you have multifocal IOL's put in your eyes ?? I did and had similar problems for 5 months or so. I ended up having them exchanged for monovision IOL's... although somewhat improved, still having problems in the right eye as if it's not powerful enough. Having MRI to rule out MS as specialist says I should have crystal clear vision by now... now I have shingles on my right torso and scalp (Thinking this may be the problem as I had similar mild symptoms around eye and scalp before) from all the stress of it. please remember, this is in my case only.

      Hello ozziegal,

Just to say that I commiserate with having eye problems and the Herpes Zoster/shingles of scalp etc; you are the first person I have heard of with same as I had.

We are in the eye forum so it`s made things complex - The virus started at the end of my spine but the effect upon my eye after taking the first tablet of Actlivar? was dramatic. I had such a stabbing in my eye that I rocked back and forth with the pain; It took several hours for it to calm down.

May I ask? Were you given anything to put on your scalp?

      Best Wishes

i suggest you go to an optometrist and have your sight tested. It sounds as if you are myopic and will need glasses for distance. However since most people who are given IOLs need glasses for reading, it is I think arguably better to be myopic than otherwise following cataract. I would rather wear glasses for long distance and be without glasses for reading, looking at flowers, etc but this is a personal opinion.

I am faced with this same decision.  Multi focal IOL's even the new tri focals, are supposedly getting mixed reviews.  On paper they are the answer, but maybe not so much in practice.  too many people switch mfrom multi focus to mono focal.  So, if I get monofocal, should I get optimized for near, far, or intermediate.  I have always been near sighted and cannot imagine having to find my glasses in order to see who is callling me on my cell phone.  I wonder if people who get cataract distance IOL mono focal wish they had gotten the near or intermediate or is it vica versa.   would love to hear your reply because it is a permanent decision.

    Hi Mary Jo,

I`m a newbie to the forum. I`m just wondering whether you have had a follow up appointment yet? It`s still early days so it`s a waiting period to see how things settle down. Having said that the eye clinic told me that I could phone in if I was worried about anything - so perhaps give them a ring?

It came  as something of a surprise to find things were not as I had expected, I had thought my full vision would be restored (Dysphotopsia aside)

I wasn`t informed that the lens`s would give me good long distance vision and I would need glasses for my near vision which is a complete blur. I`m settling for bi-focal glasses.

    Best Wishes

My situation was the other way round after cataract surgery, in that I could see for miles, but not close-up.

I am wondering if they have fitted the wrong lenses in your case, as most people have reported the same as me and not as you have experienced.

I would be tempted to have an eye test as soon as possible so at least to eliminate this possibility.

I have this same choice coming up.  what to ask for in my monofocal iol.  Distance, intermediate or near.  So it seems you have chosen distance and I am very curious to know if you are able to comfortably walk around your home without glasses or you need them just to see what is in your refrigerator or to see who is calling on your callelr id or ssee your smart phone or so many other close up and intermediate every day tasks that you may not see so clearly anymore. R U happy with your choice or do you wish you had chosen near or intermediate lenses (at the expense of your perfect distance vision) instead?  thanks,.

I think you need a refractive correction (glasses). If you had glasses before the scrip may be different.

I just had bikateral cataract surgery with a multifocal lens implant. I can see 20/20 and can read small print without correction for the first time in 15 years.

    Sorry you're having problems still.

I have cataract surgery coming up, if I can overcome my anxiety and do it already.  One doctor told  me I could wait but anohter told me it is dense already and if it becomes hard and brfittle it could be problematic in removing so the sooner the better.  Do you have the bi multi focal or the TRI multii focal. I heard multifocal had problems with contrast and intermediate range and halos and glare.  R U happy with your multi focal?  I heard so many stories about multi focal that people were so unhappy they went thru surgery again to go to monofocal. I would LOVE to be able to see at all distances but I am concerned about loss of contrast and that I heard vision is not so sharp at any distance with multi focal.  woudl appreciate your first hand experience. thanks.

Hi mary Jo, I had one cataract done last October and the other in March and my eyes were exactly the same as yours afterwards. At the follow up appointment one week later I enquired about this, and was told it was normal if I had near sighted lens fitted and it woul have been the other way round if I had had distance lens fitted. The only to avoid this is to have multi focal lens fitted, but these are only available privately not on the NHS.

you will need to go to an opticians to have a new prescription for glasses.

    I own $5700 worth of multi-focus lens's!!!

Did your vision improve at all after one ,month three months etc.?

Mine cost me absolutely nothing on our National Heath systen here in the UK, and they are great for all but reading at any distance below 12 inches.

On $5700US I could send one of my grandchildren to university for 6 months, so why would I want to spend that sort on money on myself?
