Cataracts with recurrent Iritis (Uveitis)

Posted , 5 users are following.

I have had episodes of Uveitis for 20 years now and the steroid drops I've had to use have caused cataracts in both eyes. I can't have the worst cataract removed until I go a year without Uveitis, which may be soon, but I have read that the operation itself often causes inflammation in cases like mine.

I'm wondering if anyone knows how often cataract surgery is successful in cases of chronic Uveitis.

My vision is steadily getting worse because of the cataracts so I'm getting quite worried.

I was the same as you & had my worst eye done in 1992. I had the other eye done in 2016, no one told me my eyes had to be uveitis free & I haven't been off steroid drops in my left eye for very many years.

Talk to your Consultant & good luck!

Thanks for your reply - but how is your vision - can you see OK?

My vision is ok & corrected with specs. I still get flares of iritis regularly & have wonderful Consultants at 2 hospitals, who see me urgently if necessary

i have a history of bilateral uveitis. i had first cataract removed 2/5/19. i was given high dose oral prednisone for 3 days prior to surgery and 2 weeks after with a taper. i did not flare. you typically need to be in remission for 3 months before they will do cataract surgery. i had been in remission for about 3 years thankfully.

That's great to hear! I will try to make sure they give me similar medication - it seems a good idea, thanks.
