Cement Leakage !

Well - I've had a big shock today and now know why I've been in such pain with no improvement in my lateral movement etc....an MRI has revealed the bone cement had leaked and attached itself to my knee cap ! I am told it is very rare as it usually sets fairly quickly - while on the operating table....just my luck that something has gone wrong here......NOW I need to have scar opened and the cement hacked off and flushed out somehow. I just hope the recovery is not as long as the full job but if they can't get all the cement out (which may impede the new joint function) they may need to re-do the implant!  In addition, during the operation they seem to have fractured my vertebrae - I already have a number of spine issues in L4/5 facet joints, disc removal. a denervation and now this L1 collapse! The irony of this is the vertebrae repair is a balloon inserted and filled with.....BONE CEMENT ! Ha!  Anyone experienced or heard anything like this? I feel truly deflated today after struggling for so long with this recovery.....which was never going to happen and give me a full range of movement while it was stuck like this....ho hum....x

1st December last year Martha ! As I said...no wonder my recovery is taking so long and I had no lateral movement without considerable pain....think surgeon thought I was just being a wimp tbh to have so much pain for so long and I had to push  them to get the scan to check it out....but as he says very rare situation! Hopefully they will fix it soon and I can start recovering properly....it seems never ending at moment but I can see the light now......x

So sorry to hear this missmagwumps. I would be so upset too! I had a pressfit knee implant without bone cement and at 19 months post L. tkr , I am having issues with my fibula. The fibula side seems to hurt when I bend over to touch the floor or try to clean or pick up things off the floor. I wonder if I might have a fractured fibula. Plan to request an x-ray as I have not seen the ortho since a couple of months after my TKR. Do any of you have pain with your fibula when bending over to touch the floor?

How could they break your vertebrae!!!!? Very sorry to hear this! Tomorrow after 6 weeks I see the surgeon who screwed together my broken knee cap (happened 4 weeks after the tkr). Maybe he'll adjust my straight-leg brace a bit and I can start bending it.

Don't know tbh but I do have a weakness in my lumbar spine after many procedures  and they were told to take care but surgeon says they are fairly brutal during the procedure - unless they dropped me of course...but think I would have known that....lol. I had a bad experience in recovery as they had to use Ketamine for some reason and I had a bad reaction to it - ended up fighting the aliens and recall about 5 people holding me down at one point...could have happened then....there's no knowing. Also no notes about my time in recovery - I requested them to know for my GP records what happened so I never get that drug again but no-one seems to know...I need to investigate this further....

Good luck with your next stage...x

UPDATE - I had another procedure on 17th July to try and get rid of the cement ! Surgeon opened up old wound, took off new kneecap where most of the cement was attached, chisled out all the reamining cement, flushed it all out thoroughly and screwed an new kneecap back on and glued me up ! First few weeks were difficult and painful (back on the opiates) until the pressure bandage was taken off - was a bit disconcerted by the wobbly worm like line of glue but it's all gone now.....so has my pain....I can walk without a stick after 20 odd years, can do stairs like anormal person, when I remember I can ( you tend to forget after 20 odd years of doing something in a certain way) Ha! If only they had listened to me in the first place I need not have suffered for so long ....anyhow, all is excellent now after 9 months ! I am still cautious but am never going to be really active at my age now....could do with finding a stretch class type of video/You Tube to try at home to get a bit more supple BUT need to find out what's going on with the spine now....wedge fractures/collapsed vertebrae without osteoporosis as the cause.....need to find another forum for that one....

Anyway, we don't always hear how people end up after their intial problems, so thought I'd let you know I'm aok with the knee.....not sure I would ever have the other done but never say never eh! lol x Good luck eveyone x And with extra special thanks to Chico for all his excellent sound advice.....x

I was told by my surgeon that could have MRI on leg with TKR.  That's interesting that you did.  Anyway, doesn't matter now because I have an appt with another surgeon in September.  Finally getting a second opinion on my TKR.  I had it done 7 months ago, and its been hell ever since.  I know something is wrong with it....It was a little difficult finding a orthopaedic  surgeon that would see me before a year is up.  Im so thankful I found one.   glad you are better.  Hoping that will be what I can say in a few months.... I know I've said this, but I'll say it again.  Wish I had never had this done.....  Take care....

Mmm - on reflection I should have perhaps just said a 'scan'...I had several, MRI, CT and a special isoptope (nuclear medicine) so it could have been anyone of those where the cement leakage was discovered ( it looked fairly messy) some MRI equipment is not always compatible with your prosthesis but majoirty of  todays MRI equipment is safe to use....I can check for sure which it was but have so much correspondence to go through but you can check it out on Google - let me know if you don't have any luck and I'll search it out for you....best wishes, x
