Cement Spacer

Posted , 9 users are following.

To make long story relatively short: i had my joint removed due to infection. A cement spacer is in its place until the next surgery. I have been in rehab 6 wks and have in-home PT. I do all my exercises and am ambulatory with med aides. However, 2 wks ago i started with pain in the front of my groun, hip and glute muscle. It is a 9 out of 10 pain. All mex personnel say muscles are waking up and nerves growing back. Pain pills not alleviating. I. Would like to know if this pain is excessive or is it to be expextef?

Any pain at #9 for any reason is excessive and should be addressed by a physician. Here are my thoughts, take or leave them! It is possible that the exercises you are doing are causing soft tissue damage. And a cement spacer is temporary and not optimal for for your hip like regular hip replacement prostheses are. If I were you, I'd stop all of the exercises and any extra walking, and do lots of resting and icing with my leg elevated. Perhaps your pain might lessen. It might take awhile, weeks even, but it can't hurt to rest more while you are in this transition time with a temporary implant, and it may help. Good luck with this, Brenda.

I think you may be onto something. When i started the glute squeezing i started the glute pain. My PT said to find a balance. I need to do some exercises but i also need to slow them down. Thanks for your input.

Hi Brenda, when they did my resection in December 2016, I had the worst pain one can imagine. My muscles and nerves felt like they had been put a meat grinder. I was on morphine every 4 hrs for 2 months, then on Tylenol and marijuana for another 2 months

I had rub 535 , heat, stent stimulation and sitting in hot pool for relaxing muscles. It is a year now and no more pain. Muscles get tight but I exercise and stretch every day. The deeper healing takes a good 6 months. Hang in there, it will slowly get better. My physio kept telling me that having pain was good because then I knew I had no sensory damage. I guess she was right. It is a hard balance to live with it while waiting to get better. Keep doing your exercises but listen to your body.

I'd say some pain was pretty much expected, but you should have been warned it would be that severe.

In your place I'd probably call the surgeon/hospital and check if it should be that bad.

I saw surgeon and my pcp this week. I hip replacement then debredement 3 wks later. Then removal of joint and another debriedment a month later. 4 surgeries and my bum looks like a road map. I have transferred to NE Baptist in Boston where i have the utmost confidence. It just seems the pain is so excessive. I will still do all the exercises. If anyone has been thru the cement spacer i would love to hear from them. This was totally foreign to me when it happened.

      Dear Brenda

You are being very brave coping with it all but of course necessary in the circumstances I think that Graham had to go through much the same horrible experience!

      Cheers Richard

Wow, that's so much worse than my revision which was bad enough, no wonder you're in pain.

I'd not heard of the 'cement spacer' before, looking it up on the internet I can see it's just what is needed for your condition, let's hope someone on this forum knows about recovery from it and can help you.

      Best wishes

    Dear brenda67955

I defaintly know what your going through except its my right knee. My left replacement went fine then second i started getting infections 1 and a half years later. It hurts like hell all together ì've had six òperations 5 on my right and 1 on my left. Its been over a year since mine was done from the start something didn't feel right. I've been in the hospital so many times i can't count. If you feel something is wrong talk to your doctor and lay it on the line don't beat around the bush tell him the pain is about a 9/10 . It really pisses me off when they don't listen . If hes a male doctor tell him the pain is so bad and ask him if hes ever been kicked in the penis if he says yes say well then do something about my pain because for me it feels that way every second of every day. Ì've had so many close calls with dying one time i went into septic shock they told me if i waited any longer i would have died. You know your body and ìf you feel something is wrong go get it checked out and don't take no for an answer push back if you have to.

    Take care and good luck
