i didn't know there were two ways to put a new hip in! 😳 Can anybody enlighten me on how they choose which one?  I see my surgeon this Friday. Getting a list of stuff together to ask. I'd like to not sound like a real dummy when I ask. 😊 Thanks!

Mine is Posterior, and I'm a mess.  The closer it gets, the higher the anxiety level. My surgery is on the 19th. I'll be glad to have it over and done with. I can only hope I don't have any major problems and recovery isn't as bad as I seem to think it's going to be.  i hope, like you, that none of my fears come true.

Our oldest daughter is in the Air Force stationed in England, and I would sure like everything to be in order so we can visit next summer. Guess that will be my goal!!!

Mine was cementkess posterior. Surgeon said do to my that was the best. I was 65 at th time. He said cement depends on the age , health and activity level. Make sure you have an experienced surgeon and you will be fine

Hey Susan! I actually had mine done laterally (incision is on the side of hip). Doc pulls muscles and and tendons to the side instead of cutting them. Recovery has been pretty easy! Im 6 months post op and so glad I had it done! Ask lots of questions and I can't stress the importance of Physical therapy! Good luck!

Hi Susan, I had anterior approach uncemented thr 11 weeks ago, I really was not told nor did I ask about which way the surgeon was going to perform it. I later found out that because I am an active 48 year old the uncemented is the best option , supposedly this prosthesis will last only 10-15 years so if I have a recision later it's easier for the surgeon to remove the old one . Also when I asked my surgeon he said he hasn't cemented one in over 5 years , hope this helps 😊

      Revision not recision lol

      Dear Kelly

This sounds really very odd.   10 to 15 years i snot the length of time one would expect.  More like 20 plus years.  Surely it was not your surgeon who told you this!

Mine done in 1997 (posterior and uncemented) needed revising a few months ago and I gave it a very hard time over those twenty years!

      Cheers

Thanks Richard for that, I really do hope this new hip lasts for 20 plus years cause I really don't want to have another surgery anytime soon...

    Hi Susan,

the date is getting closer !! how exciting and nerve wrecking at the same time --

I remember that my surgeon told me something about the implant and it would be uncemented --- to be honest, he could have told me anything at that time, it went right over my head -

I am not sure about it but guess that uncemented will be done if your young enough to qualify for, if necessary, a revision after 20--25 years - it will be easier to remove joint -

Is your husband going with you?  have him ask questions too, okay --- You might be so overwhelmed and perhaps intimidated (I was, for sure!!! ) -

come back and let us know what happened ...

    big warm hug

Hi, Renee I just read your post and I liked that you said 20-25 years that's more like it...I hope mine does last that long...

Had mine done at 56 posterior, ceramic cementless. Surgeon said it would last a lifetime x

My surgeon wouldn't do an anterior hip replacement he said there was to many failures, no muscles or tendons get cut they go between but they don't always get the placement right, the posteria one takes much longer to recover but is more stable , what they don't tell you before your op is that you can never bend forward more than 90 degrees , you can never rotate your hip or bend down on the operated side sideways to put on your shoe you have to sit down and go down between your knees , it makes yogi a lot harder , good luck

      Dear Maggi

I would disagree about what you are saying about the posterior approach.   Mine done twenty years ago did not hold back my recovery as I was walking aid free after a week and could do anything I wanted right up until I had it revised as the cup wore out after twenty years of farming and heavy building work.  I could put both hands flat on the floor whist standing up and I'm 76.

There seem to be some very odd stories floating about that  do nothing but distract anyone about to have hip surgery!

      Cheers

      Richard
