cementless total left hip replacement

Posted , 3 users are following.

Hi, I’m a 31 male and having a cementless total hip replacement with a ceramic ball against a polyethylene socket in October 2012, less than 3 months away.

I have a target set by the consultant to lose 3 stone prior to the operation so concentrating my efforts on that.

Initial problem started 20 years ago with a slipped capital femoral epiphysis, after 3 operations at the time and basically 18 months on crutches unable to walk I had actually has a fairly normal teens and early adulthood.

I love the outdoor life and really miss being able to do what I used to do. I have a young lad and another child on the way so need to be fit for them.

Pain has slowly increased over the last 3-4 years with loss of movement, the last x-ray about 2 weeks ago showed complete loss of joint space and some erosion of the already mushroom shaped femoral head.

Any tips or advice great appreciated and of course I will offer the same.

I can't give you much advice as i am in same position as you.I am having my left hip replaced on fri.I am also having ceramic ball with polythene socket but i will also need a bone graft as well which means i will be in hospital for a couple of weeks.I am 48 and i was hit by a hit and run driver while i was cycling to work over a year ago.The driver was never found.I smashed my accetabulum and had metal work put in but unfortunatley has got worse.I have bone rubbing on bone and and avascular necrosis. So hip replacement is my only option.

It was supposed to be with NHS in september but it was delayed by 2 months so now the motor insurance bureaux are paying for it privately so it's going to be in 2 days time.

    Hi Pinesy.

You will find after your op and a period of recupperation that having the new hip will make a great difference to your life.

You will be able to walk without pain and I'm sure be quite surprised how easy it all is, instead of being painful and difficult.

There are a few movements you have to be careful with, crossing your legs is one no no. You should get lots of help from the hospital/physio. Make a list and write down all the questions you have thought of and ask. Some people don't and it really makes a difference. It's your body after all.

I have had six operations on my joints but not hips yet. One day my turn will come.

So good luck and hope you're out there playing (gently) football with your kids one of these days.

    Best wishes, Fanny Jane.

Hi Pinesy.Hi the Op went well. When surgeon took my ball joint out it fell into peices and he said to me i must have been in pain.I was in hospital for ten days. The worst bit was first 4 days after op where my left leg was stapped down. After that i was allowed to get out of bed and hobble on a zimmer around the room.A couple of days later i was using crutches.Because i had a bone graft i was non weight bearing for 3 wks then partial weight bearing for another 3 wks. Then i saw my surgeon at outpatients and he told me to be partial weight bearing for another 6 wks.So i wont be off crutches till november.I'm doing ok.stopped using painkillers and i am doing physio excercises on the bed 40 mins a day (20 mins in morning and night).I am seeing the physio in a couple of weeks again and will be able to use excersice bike with no resistance.I have got a copy of my xray and i will try post it on here.
