Ceramic Hip

Hi all,

Thank you for the warm welcome in my first post. Such great info and support.

Had my appt this morning with the surgeon doing my op and we have agreed to go spinal with sedation. He told me he has had some bizarre conversations through the screen with people who chose no sedation but I am definitely not going to be doing that! Don't want to distract him, lol!

Quick question: he has suggested because of my age (51) that I go with a ceramic hip (ball and socket). He tells me it's longer wearing. He did also say that there is a very very slim chance (1/500) of grinding/squeaking with both parts ceramic and could have a type of plastic socket if worried. He recommends going for both ceramic but ultimately my choice. Any thoughts gratefully received. Seems like a slim chance and want it to last as long as possible but the idea of having further surgery to rectify it down the line is s bit off-putting!!

Thank you!

Sam

Hi Samantha  My ball is ceramic & the socket is plastic.  The rest is titanium.  Sounds good.

Hi Samantha, I had ceramic on ceramic, my surgeon recommended it as long wearing. I'm 58, and apart from the hip I'm fit and healthy. I had it almost 6 months ago, and so far, all going well. No grinding or squeaking yet. My surgeon did talk about that when we discussed it. He seems to think the hip might last a lifetime. Here's hoping!

Hi Samantha, I had bilateral hip replacements done 4 weeks ago. I'm 43 years old and my surgeon suggested ceramic with a plastic liner to prevent squeaking. He said he's hopeful they would last 25-30 years and perhaps my lifetime.

So far things have been pretty good!

I also had spinal with sedation.

    Good luck with your surgery!

      Hi Kim

I noted that you had bi lateral hip replacement done 4 weeks ago as I am having the same done a week on Thursday I was wondering how you are getting on. I am so so scared I have never been in hospital before and am a nervous wreck. I know I have to go through with it as I am in such pain. I haven't yet decided to go for an epidural with sedation or GA. I am so worried I might wake up if I opt for sedation. I am going in the day before so will discuss then. Your advice would be greatly appreciated. Wishing you a pain free recovery.

Hi Ann, I only had one hip done, but I really recommend Spinal with sedation. I was just asleep, and didn't hear or feel a thing. Had lunch an hour later.

      Ann,

I had the sedation when I had both of my hip injections. I was very nervous the first time but it is really like a mild GA with far less after effect and you feel fine afterwards. Ready to eat!

      Good luck

Hi Ann, I was extremely nervous too but everything was fine! The anaesthesiologist suggested to me to have a spinal plus GA, as he didn't want to risk the spinal wearing off due to the length of surgery time having both hips done. He included the spinal, as he said it had some benefits to it(can't remember what?). The first two weeks are quite difficult and having help is extremely important. After that, every day I started noticing improvements. I am off all pain meds and walk around the house and up and down my stairs with no aids. I live in Canada and it's freezing so I don't get out of the house much right now. I still use my crutches when going for an extended walk. I'm so happy I chose to have bilateral over having one surgery after another. Even though it may be harder those first couple weeks, no worrying about another surgery. I'm sure you will be fine! Good luck!!

Samantha, Ceramic on Ceramic will last much longer - so will mean less revisions, which as you say, you really do not want.  I had to have revision due to mistakes, and the recovery starts all over again frown.
