cervical spine

Hello everyone,

I recently went for an MRI scan around 2 weeks ago, i've just gotten home from work (saturday) to a letter from my doctor stating the neurologist has found problems with my cervical spine and to make an appointment as soon as possible to discuss it. I'm now worried sick and the surgery is closed. I'm contemplating going to the hospital in case it's a neck fracture but don't want to look an idiot. Does anyone have any info about cervical spine problems, could it be something minor?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

There's a lot of info regarding cervical spine issues anywhere from a herniated disc to degenerate arthritis. Rather than guess plz call your doc Monday . I'm sure if it were anything serious the doc would have called you and had you come in.

Many blessings sent your, & I hope that you find relief, strength, comfort, & ultimately freedom from your illness.

arronp hi, try not to let your feelings run riot. It is just a letter telling you to contact your GP. How long did it take to come? You had the MRI scan 2 weeks ago. If there were anything wrong with it that would have told you there and then and you would have been admitted to hospital then. The staff that control and work the MRI Scanner are very skilled people who have been to university and have degrees in radiology. They look at the MRI images as you are moving through the MRI Scanner. Trust me if anything bad was seen they would have contacted their boss  and he/she would have been straight there to look at the scan.

Remember the completed scan is sent via computer to the consultant radiologist and they read the scan. They then write a letter to your GP telling them what was seen on the scan. Then the GP will contact you either by phone or by letter. There might be something wrong but it is definatelly not life threatening. So try to calm down and contact the surgery on Monday morning. Best Regards Peter.

Are you in the UK?  My local hospital cannot afford its own MRI scanners and the scanners are operated by a private company (InHealth) The staff are not very skilled and the scan is sent somewhere to be checked and the results returned to the local consultant.

When I recently went for a scan one evening they would not do it because I put on their questionnaire that I have a tissue aortic valve. I told them that only applied to mechanical valves they asked how I knew that I had a tissue valve! They wanted my GP's name and the name of the consultant who had fitted the valve so that they could check if I could have the scan.  I asked if they thought that the consultant who had my notes and had referred me did not know his job or my history to no avail and that I had recently had an MRI scan at the hospital who had done my AVR.

They phoned me the next day with an appointment for the Saturday morning........... different staff with poor English and we went through the same discussion again as nothing had been put on paper.

My next visit will probably be worse as I have since been fitted with an MRI compatible pacemaker that a technician has to turn off prior to the scan.

Yes, it was to you as you were praising.the skill of those doing the scans. My eyesight is perfect since having had cataract surgery. Does Raigmore own its own MRI scanner?

I'm in South East England. Perhaps I should return home to Scotland:-)

If you go to the hospital A&E probably won't be able to access your records. Last time I went to my local A&E they only had a record of my last visit there three years before and nothing on my later out patient appointments or admissision..

Thanks everybody for your replys, it's really helped me to calm down a bit! As soon as i opened the letter the panic bells started ringing, i then started googling neck  fractures and cervical spine which made things worse.

I'll get my last shift done at work tomorrow, and then as you said phone the docs first thing monday morning.

Can't thank you all enough smile

Did you have any type of accident to cause a fracture?

I did have a bike accident a few weeks prior where i injured my back, however i've been to the doctors now, and apparently i have a piece of bone sticking out slightly and pressing on a couple of nerves, the doc said it's just wear and tear and nothing to worry about.Again, thanks for all the help smile
