Hi there, my friend finally went to see a doctor yesterday, got him to stop the tegretol and start taking neurontin 300mg morn and night. But is in the worse pain he has ever been in, yesterday and today! Is this the change over of tablets? How long should it be before the new drugs kick in??? Please advise!

You people have been a great source of information and comfort for both of us, and really appreciate your time!

omg tegretol has to be weaned off slowly. if a person stops taking it suddenly symptoms can worsen. this happened to me. you can even read about the drug warnings online. he should go back to the doctor immediately!

Hi there, yeah was a stupid doctor, he commented that 'there isn't anything that a neurologist can do for you that i can't'! Just shows how much of an idiot he was! New doctor this week!

The going off Tegretol can cause a lot of pain and the starting Neurotin takes a while to really help.  I would suggest to continue the Neurotin steadily.   I just read the other comments and they are so correct.  He should not have even reduced Tegretol until another medication was stopping the pain.

Your Tegretol has to be cut down gradually and at the same time start to introduce the new drug. Usually over many days. Have you been offord Lamotridgene ? I take it with Gabapentine and Tegretol.

Thankyou everybody who has commented. My friend is back taking the Tegretol at 200mg am/pm and the Neurontin 300mg am/pm. Yesterday he actually had five 1 minute periods of NO pain!!! YAY!!! Today was more of a 'sensation' tingling numbness all day with the other attacks slightly less, so hope we're on to something here. He is going to slowly increase both and see how he goes. angiegirl what is Lamotridgene? Not heard of that before! Thanx again, these sites are much more helpful than any doctor!!!

that's good news. tegretol is pretty much always effective. so if it's not working it may not be TN, if he has to increase he should increase by 100mg (cutting the pill in half) and increase gradually and take them around the same time everyday. i did mines at 6am and 6pm.
