Changes in IBS condition with age.

I wonder if someone might be able to help. I have had been diagnosed with IBS and manage my symptoms fairly well with the occassional flare up. I am 60 which is fairly young by todays stardards but

1) Do your IBS symptoms get worse as you get older or stay the same.

2) Does the list of foods you can tolerate get longer as you get older.

3) Have you discoverd a pain killer which works for you on your IBS symptoms.

You can see what I am after can't you? I am looking for an insite into the future. Someone out there will have the answers.

Thank you in anticipation,

robert

    Thank you nadine,

I appreciate your reply but has the list of foods you cannot tolerate increased as you have got older or does it remain the same. I am trying to work out whether my condition will get worse with age.

Yes,I think as we get older the symtomps change for the worse. I haven`t been able to find a way to reallt control it neither have I managed to find a suitable pain killer for it.! I constantlt take paracetamol.! Practically daily at times, but it really is not the solution in the end. I know what you mean but this is a bane of our lives  who ever suffers from it.!!

    Hi Robert

I am now 66 and been suffering with IBS since my mid thirties.

My main symptoms are low down discomfort most of the time, worse after eating, loose BM alternating to near constipation, occasional heartburn and bad taste in the mouth at times.

1, In my case the symptoms have certainly got more troublesome in the last 5 years or so.

2, Foods that I could eat before, now seem to cause me more discomfort, like any soup with onion in, cherry tomatoes, tinned tomatoes, yogurts which I seemed to be able to eat before now cause a reaction. I've never been able to eat cheese or citrus fruits as I also suffer with Migraine.

3, I've never discovered a painkiller that works on the gut, the only medicine I have found that helps a little is Psyllium Husk powder which I get on prescription which helps with the symptoms, but certainly no cure.

    Best wishes

    Dear Kokana and phil6023,

I really do appreciate your comments, this is exactly what I wanted to know. You can see what I am after can't you. I was diagnosed with IBS by my GP and a consultant that did my colonoscopy. The qestions I asked were simply trying to find out what is likely to happen to me. I am 60 years old, I have been able to improve on my diabetes symptoms just by loosing weight ( 7 stone to be precise ) but this IBS is a bit of a problem. The GP's don't seem to know what causes it and they cannot cure it. You have answered my questions perfectly, thank you both.

Hope you have a great Christmas
