They do seem to help particularly  with the odor though the bloating and amount of gas will be reduced too.  Need to work up to an amount where the stool is "peppered" with black specks is the best I can tell you.  This might be two tablets or capsules every meal or more.  Herbs that help reduce gas: Cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, and garlic are potent in reducing gas. The potency of garlic increases when heated, whereas the potency of cinnamon decreases. Other useful spices in reducing gas, including turmeric, black pepper, asafoetida and ginger.

Thank you . When you say it reduces farting would you say it takes it from excessive to a normal level ? And regarding the odour are you saying charcoal makes it odourless?

      Thank you

Can't really predict.  It could reduce gas and smell down to almost normal if the begining problem is due to irritants to the colon wall.  Those are like excessive bile production, allergens or some chemical in foods.  Even if you are eating the infamous legumes and take a charcoal tablet it will help reduce that to comfortable levels!  Asafoetida is used in Easter cooking for that purpose as kind of a frontal attack to keep down the fartage of your supper (see _____ )

As to other medical problems where people have IBS, I am not sure but would say the odor would be helped right off.  As to the amount of gas, not sure but should be reduced.  Sometimes the gas is due to the pain experienced!  You hurt and unknowingly swallow air when grimacing which makes more gas.

That's interesting. My mum has also had rip roaring sciatica which has had her groaning in agony so maybe that is making her swallow air.

She doesn't have pain particularly with her ibs, just urgency and diarhoea - however you spell it!

I had thought about bacteria, yeast overgrowth or something like that. She just sounds like a fermenting and sealed bottle of milk waiting to go bang!

No, but she's had ibs going back to the year dot, with flare ups every so often that have become endemic and a big problem. Too much stress for too many years.

I agree with you. I've reduced my intake of carb and fruit and I have deflated. It has been spectacular. I read a book called life without bread and I followed his advice.

Thanks for that - we had a hunch that it might be an underlying irritant - she is lactose intolerant. Might be worth a try

My mum is really suffering at the mo with her ibs. She sounds like a gurgling, fermenting septic tank! Any ideas anyone?
