Chest and back pain

Ok so I have a bunch of different things going on. I had a scope and found out I have GERD, acid reflux, a hiatal hernia, and Barretts esophagus. I am also having an attack of diverticulitis and cystitis which I was hospitalized for and am currently on antibiotics. My chest pain is starting again after not having it for a few days. I had low potassium and magnesium at the hospital as well but I can't tell what is causing it. I've also been told I have costochrondritis and musculoskeletal issues. I threw up twice today just feeling really sick to my stomach. GI doc says my hernia shouldn't cause chest pain but I also feel this weird empty feeling and it hurts through to my back. I also don't have a gallbladder bladder. Any ideas?

Kim, First , let me say I'm sorry you are having multiple problems at once.

Let  me add that chest pain can most definitely be assosciated with your diagnoses regardless of what the Dr says. ( These days if it's not in their book then it's not). Unfortunately, there are no good diagnosticians in physicians anymore.

If the chest pain persists with medication, you might consider a cardiologist to rule out a heart problem. This is very much overlooked in women.

All the best in your recovery.

I had several EKGs and a xray and chest CT scan with contrast and I've also had a stress test. While I was in the hospital this past weekend they had me on a heart monitor the entire time I was there and nothing abnormal showed.

I too don't have a gall bladder and have a 5cm hiatus hernia.  I also experience chest pain from time to time and this is because the stomach slips from the abdominal cavity into the chest cavity which effectively makes the stomach press on the lungs.  I have had many a sleepless night because of this until it has worked its way back down.  Lets hope they sort you out.

Mine is behind my breast but they didn't tell me how big it is.

That is very bizarre.  Are you sure it is a hiatus hernia as that is where you have a tear in the abdomen which allows the stomach to move?

The GI doctor did a endoscopy and said I have a sliding hiatal hernia behind my breastbone as far as I know there is no tear.

A hernia is the protrusion of an organ, typically the stomach, through the oesophageal opening in the diaphragm.  I would go to see your GP and ask them to give you more information and details.

I went to see my doctor today and I wasn't even thinking to ask her.

Very interested to read your story. For some time I have tried to identify the cause of my chest discomfort and because I have had heart issues and a hiatus hernia, thought process heads in those directions but often feel things start after some sort of physical activity and my searching had led me to Costochrondritus but cardiac and Gastric specialists don't seem much interested. I get the chest pain, sometimes manifesting itself as back pain in Kidney area, and your 'feeling of emptiness' is a spot on symptom description . Can you advise who diagnosed your Costochronditus? I will follow your story as it evolves and if my journey through the NHS maze produces anything of interest I will post updates! Good luck.

The GP I had before my current one said it was costochrondritis. My current GP does not think so. It's hard to say at this point. I do have severe acid reflux as well as the hernia. I don't some looking online and the empty feeling can be caused by the her it says. Also diverticulitis can cause chest pain. I also have pain in my ribs quite a bit too but I guess that could be caused by gas, bloating, inflammation. It's hard to tell. lso I was seeing a physical therapist who said that poor posture can cause those symptoms as well. Honestly I'm not sure but my body seems to be a mess.

The more you write the more feels same as my issues. So many bits hurt I feel like a hypochondriac and worry I am imagining them. Do you ever get shivers which for a while are pretty uncontrollable? Similar to when you a fever/flu etc.

My poor posture has been commented on before but not connected as a source of my chest/back discomfort. Poss Empty feeling source is part interesting. As said will update feedback idc as doctors think a weakened swallow function is beginning to give me problems pushing food through the Nissan Fundoplication modification which had done c 15 years ago. I am hoping to have a partial reversal op to help although know may see increase in Acid Reflux symptoms as experienced pre that Op. Wasn't told 25 years ago that this can happen but then last 15 years have been much improved after the Op do wouldn't change things if could. Again good luck

I'm wondering if I need one of those fundoplications if my sphincter doesn't open and close properly. Last night I had so much acid. I ate too much and I had the wrong food. I actually ate one piece of pizza with tomato sauce. Huge mistake. My stomach burned all night long!
