Hi all, went to the walk in centre today due to oral thrush and a cough. Been diagnosed with a chest infection and prescribed Doxycycline even though only last week I had Tonsillitis and was on Clarithromycin.

I can't stop coughing and it bloody hurts each time I cough, my heart is racing and I'm coughing up loads of phlegm, my ribs ache and so does my chest sad the symptoms only started this morn.

I'm afraid that this may turn into Pneumonia or Sepsis rolleyes I hate being ill. Can anyone give me any advice on how to stop coughing so much? Thanks

Hi darrianne, please don't lay down on your back or sleep on your back...this will cause pneumonia.  I have had coughts last for over a month. I drink tea with lemon and honey .... I even put a spoon full of Manuka honey in my mouth and swallow it. Very good for a cough. Also, put your head over a hot pot of water...keep a light towel over your head and breathe in from your abdomen all the way up to your chest.  Most coughts linger due to shallow breathing. You can only do this over the warm water.  My advice ... don't talk... breath through your nose and try to have someone make you chicken soup & drink tea a lot. I actually fractured a rib last year just because of a cough. My sides felt horrible and my ribcage was so sore.  If you feel as though you have to vomil because of all the phlegm... go ahead... because that will get a lot of it out ... also, blow your nose.. , take a hot shower ... etc. There are many herbs that are said to help shorten a chest infection... but I have found tea with lemon and honey the best. Just don't lie down on your back ever... your lungs need to stay as healthy as possible. I am praying for you xx
