Genital HSV1 rarely recurs in most people, maybe just once a year on average, if that, and are way milder than the first outbreak. As a result, you don't need to worry about the chickenpox vaccine. Only one tiny study was ever conducted on this, the methodology of which was pretty dodgy, so I'm not sure that the results can be repeated. The fact that it has never been followed up with a larger study is also suspect. But it doesn't hurt to try, so it's up to you, although I wouldn't worry about it if I were you.

Unfortunately there's no cure hun, all you can do is get on the right meds for you...

I wasn't asking if you think that's not a cure I was asking for people to let me know if they have done that before and what results they have gotten because actually a lot of people have done that and been clean from herpes outbreaks as far as they know, thanks.

      Hello buddy,

Chickenpox is a virus caused by a totally different virus. There is no Scientific background of using a vaccine that is intended for chickenpox would work on HSV1.

The first outbreak of HSV is generally the worst, by time you will get less amount of outbreaks.

My Recommendations: Check with your doctor to use Aciclovir, which is the prescribed medication in HSV.

      BEST REGUARDS!!

5 month old post but after reading the replies I felt a need to chime in for others who happen across this page.

First, Feliz is correct. The study was small and inconclusive overall as to the efficacy of the chicken pox vaccine on genital/oral herpes.

    HOWEVER

Robert is incorrect in that "herpes is caused by a totally different virus". Chicken pox, Shingles, genital herpes, and cold sores are all herpes viruses. Everyone has herpes in one form or another.

Further, all of this advice on daily medication being your only option is just sad. And daily medication is not shown to reduce the frequency of outbreaks when one stops medication - guaranteeing lifetime reliance. Not saying it isn't an option. Just know it doesn't have to be THE option. Plenty of people live without and live fine without.

And, antecdotally, after having the chicken pox vaccine after contracting herpes 2 years back someone I know has not had an oubreak since. So, it's worth continuing your research to see if such an experiment is right for you. Just don't get your hopes up too high as, again, most of the evidence will be antecdotal evidence given the small sample size of the beforementioned study.

Also feel free to look into the satisics on herpes, the percentage of people with type 1 and 2, your risks, etc. Also look into sites not located in the U.S. for this research such as those based in Europe. The U.S. is god awful at displaying factual data when there is money involved and our doctors are also less than knowedgable in the subject of herpes as well. Probably for similar reasons but them's the breaks.

Good luck and take care all who read this.

Hey starfish not exactly sure if it will help you or not or if you have insurance or not but not sure what type I had/have cuz i was too scarred to go and find out..to me i new dat it was no cure so i would try and contain it..but long story short I've had it for yrs now and can tell you 1st how the hsv3 or chickenpox vaccine def worked for me ...i received 2 shots both at a pharmacy as a walk in no id required and paid 150 each since I had no insurance. ..was mid outbreak and was so terrible I said f... it why not got the shot exactly 30 days later had and outbreak but this time was so mild i couldn't tell to be %100 sure it was an outbreak...28 days after your 1st shot you need the 2nd dose or start over so i got the 2nd 30 days exactly..30 days after same thing really mild outbreak...but!!... 2 yrs later since shots hadnt had a single 1 yet!! I'm a strong believer its a cure not sum bs again not sure if they were outbreaks tbh cuz the way they were b4 it was night n day dif n went away within 3 days ..3rd day scabs gone and all it was so amazing but if you read the shot vaccine paper it take 3 weeks for your system to get the antibodies going for the vaccine so im sure das why I had an outbreak 30 days after both shots but again hadn't had an outbreak n 2 yrs after the 2 shots of hsv3 hope it make you feel better cuz I've tried every online forum since I've had it and can tell you they all suck teatree oil aint work coconut oil lysine pills only work with hsv1 so spend the money it's worth 30p bucks to never have an outbreak again and I only found 1 article on this it was a study in Paris and all who receive the s**t stopped having outbreaks reply in 90 days and tell me your the happiest person ever haha ladt thing since you body is new to hsv it may take while for you body to learn and fight it in not sure if me having it for yrs helped cuz sum people say they get milder as time goes on well for me it didn't get better and I spent yrs of online searching as well as using waterproof bandaids to cover at 1st sign of outbreak I used nexcare they are hydrocolloid made and will not let the virus spread to other parts of your body or to anyone else..had the same partner for yrs and been safe with no transmission make sure it completely covers it and use a bigger bandage over that 1 to be safe and leave them on few days each..always wash hands after any contact and be safe and you should be fine..remember eyes mouth ears and nose is fastest way into you body..more at risk if your a woman the then a man

Still outbreak free? How did you find out about the chickenpox vaccine?

    Hi @starfish19092.

I see that this was posted a year ago so I’m sure your interests may have shifted or perhaps you’ve gathered all the info you needed on the topic already.

I just wanted to say that I have received the chicken pox vaccine years ago (have never contracted chicken pox) but I still contracted HSV1 a few years after that vaccine. So in my case, and maybe in general, the varicella vaccine does not prevent HSV acqusition... though My primary outbreak was very mild and I have high hopes I won’t experience any future symptoms... maybe the vaccine will be a factor in this? Unsure but that would be nice.

Let us know if you had found any more info on the vaccine subject. Thanks!

Please do not listen to the lady that says the chicken pox vaccine helped her. Either she is lying because she had the chicken pox vaccine and is now like me having more and worse outbreaks, or her case is different. Please use your own judgment when it comes to making a decision on whether to get the chicken pox vaccine or not!! I not only listen to other people on forms but I had to get the vaccine for school and I regret it everyday. I was diagnosed with hsv2 about 1year ago. When I found out I was devestated and began searching for ways to naturally suppress or cure even my outbreaks. I found one, olive leaf extract. Taking olive leaf extract suppressed my outbreaks to 0 but then I got the chicken pox vaccine, worse mistake of my life! Now I have outbreaks twice a month in clusters and in three different areas. Before (olive leaf extract) I was getting them once a month around the time for my cycle. But now, before I can even heal from one sore here comes another, so sex is obselete !!! I have now decided to go on the prescribed acyclovir in hopes of suppressing my outbreaks but after the shot I just don’t know! I hope this helps you! Best of luck with everything.

I could buy that the vaccine has no affect.. But there is zero evidence that getting any type of hsv3 vaccine makes things worse. There is only limited inconclusive evidence saying it helps. I suspect that you may have a weakend or suppressed immune system from another condition. I would encourage having a discussion with your doctor to rule out other causes. There have been large studies with hsv3 (shingles and chickenpox) vaccinations and I'm not aware of any reports of increased outbreak activity.

I don’t know what evidence your speaking of but my evidence is in my experience. Everyone is different! I can’t speak for researchers or others I’m speaking for me! If  there isn’t significant evidence to prove it helps , what makes you think there is enough done to prove it doesn’t! And Umh ! Duh! yes I do believe my immune system would’ve been weakened  after receiving an injection of foreign microbes! Lol! Just like some get sick after receiving the flu shot! But to suggest I have something  else going on is kind of forced! Im healthy and eat very well. I’m speaking from experience so here is your report of it making outbreaks worse!

I don't have the exact studies to cite right at this moment - but I can supply them here later. There have been very large Shingles vaccines trials ( which is basically the chickenpox vaccine at a 14x concentration) In the study of thousands of patients, no change or introduction of any HSV2 events was noted above the placebo group. I believe the study group was in the dozens of thousands range.

      https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa051016

So to say that an HSV3 vaccine had an effect on HSV2, positive or negative, tells me that they are related somehow - which is interesting.

You have to remember roughly 90% of people infected with HSV2 show no symptoms. Having outbreaks is more of an immune system issue than the virus itself. I have read accounts of people having various immunological compromises that cause worsening of their symptoms.

I do value your anecdotal data here. I've read countless positive experience from the chicken pox and shingles vaccine scattered across the internet. I've seen one French study ( which was small but well put-together for what it was, a justification to put together a more sophisticated larger trial)

I am baffled on why no more trials were done on this. I'd love to see a larger one ( even if the outcomes are completely different, but I have not seen a single trial disproving this suggestive data )

One kind of believes that the BILLION dollar herpes anti-viral pharms would not like to see this. I don't have herpes but I am left scratching my head over the French study. I also don't trust forums as I am fully aware that bigpharms have crews doing so much online/social marketing and manipulations to keep people chugging their meds.

So yea, bottom line is....I say it is possible that the cross-immunity properties of the chickenpox vaccine could effect HSV2 symptoms. When I see a controlled and organized university study done by doctors saying otherwise - I will reconsider. Stuff you hear on forums, meh...who knows...

Yes! Absolutely the Shingles vaccines work for my ocular HSV-1 outbreaks.

I have been vaccinated with both vaccines available on the market. Both work almost immediately.

Vaccines will lose their efficacy over time so they may need to be repeated regularly. In my case they work for about 4 yrs, before outbreaks reoccur. I have had 3 re-vaccinations since Zostavax was released on the market. I recently used Shingrex and it works just fine.

Why do they work? Our immune systems often are fooled to attack similar antigens. The first vaccine ever was developed when it was observed that milkmaids were immune to small pox. The reason was that cow pox and small pox have similar DNA.

HSV1, HSV2 and HSV3 (shingles) are very similar in their DNA makeup. They all belong to the same family of viruses. Thus it's not surprising that the shingles vaccines succeed in fooling my immune system into attacking my HSV-1 viruses.

Not everyone's immune works the same. Some will not recognize HSV-1 as HSV-3 bio-equivalent.

According to medical researchers, vaccinations may be repeated multiple times. Unlike antibiotics, resistance is not an issue.

The shingles vaccine is much more potent than the chicken pox vaccine, so don't bother with the latter.

The French study was small and not randomized, but the outcome was remarkable. After receiving their Zostavax vaccines, all 24 patients with chronic HSV-1 were free of outbreaks for 6 yrs!

I'm surprised given the science of immunology, that clinicians don't use Zostavax in an off-label manner to at least attempt to cure HSV-1 and HSV-2.

Zostavax used live attenuated viruses while Shingrex doesn't. Live is considered best in class. It will be interesting how long Shingrex protects me from reocurrences.

Really??? Is this for real?? Have anyone tried it too??

  • Edited

I had the SHINGLES vaccine done, the live version. I JUST TOLD my doctor that my mother had shingles at a young age and I WAS WORRIED. i use to get herpies outbreaks once every 3 months. after I HAD MY first outbreak after vaccination, I DIDNT have one for 3 years. not a cure but improves immune response. better and healthier than antivirals!!!!! so it's the way to go. ZOSTAVAX and at least chicken pox vaccine. my sister did get shingles in her early 40's.
