Choice of stick/trekking pole

i am currently researching to find the best walking pole (or stick/trekking pole etc.) Can anyone recommend one that is best for   use after hip replacement. I quite like the sound of the Leki Wanderfreund. The market is so confusing with all the different options. Any advice? Ruth

I would look into getting a cane with a base where it can stand on its own.  It will still fall on the ground on occasion.  Many of these are adjustable so its the proper length based on your height.

If you have a base, you should be able step on the base and bring it upright.

    Good Luck  biggrin

Ruth, I too have been looking at poles, I fancy Nordic walking poles, as I think I woukd get more use from them once fully recovered. They are a great workout for your core.

That's a great idea, Josey. I signed up for Nordic walking a few months ago but couldn't do it because my hip got worse. Investing in a pair will be a good incentive to give it another go. Ruth

As long as it has built in shock absorber - I just got the cheapest telescopic ones ones at my local trekking store - they were great, and now 9 months post-op so easy to take on holiday just in case I need some support.

Me too, mine were £16ish from Costco. I think they are made from carbon & are adjustable. They also came with some interchangeable heads for different terrain (sand, mud) etc.

Thanks for your comment. Are you allowed to give me the details of the poles you recommend and what to look out for? I just need fairly basic ones. Thanks Ruth

BTW I read your detailed comments on recovery post HR which someone on here posted a link to and it was very helpful indeed. So thanks for that.

I'd gove you the details, but I really cannot remember - I just walked into the store and picked the cheapest pair that were telescopic and had shock absorbers built in.  Having them telescopic makes them easier to get in and out of the car/bus/train with.

There are many very nice designer types (carbon fibre etc) available, but I just needed something simple and cheap.  I would look at online stores (Argos, Amazon and the like), or ebay even.
