I had lots of problems with my left ear, it was always going deaf but often I could hold my nose and blow this would ‘clear’ the blocked feeling and I could hear for a while, but it wouldn’t last, on examination after sometime I was told I have [b:d6e763b2df]cholesteatoma[/b:d6e763b2df], I had this operated on Fri 30 Nov 07, at st George’s Tooting.

I Had a large amount removed, and the large hearing bone removed, I have lots of packing in it now and cant hear anything in it, I am hoping when the packing is removed I may get some hearing back in that ear! It not been too painful, just the first couple of days after surgery. i go bach Wed 12 Nov for packing to be removed. :?

    Hi there

I went to see a my GP regarding a constant ringing in my left ear, he advised me that it sounded like tinitus. I had private health care so he sent me to see an ear specialist, where I had several tests before being diagnosed with Cholesteatoma at the end of 2008. The operation was carried out in January 2009. I was in overnight and went home the following day. I only had mild discomfort and pain for the first few days and my hearing was very bad in the infected ear compared to what it had been, though I put this down to the fact it was full of packing. This was removed after about 3 weeks but the hearing was still impaired. When I went for check ups, I mentioned the fact that my hearing was really bad compared to what it had been before the op and was told by the specialist that if there was damage to the inner ear during the procedure and the ear cells are damaged, the hearing will NOT return and there is nothing that can be done to rectify this.

Well, i have just had my 3rd operation (1st - May 1997, 2nd - Feb 2007 and now Aug 2009) to remove the cholesteatoma as it returned! (10% of people experience a return of the condition, dont i feel lucky  ). I have had a bad time as the disease decided to eat away ay the hearing bones and i have had to have extensive surgery to rebuild the ear!

I know have had the packing removed and i can not hear anything out of my ear! really worried this is permenant! but will not know till i see my consultant in 4 weeks.

I also suffer from ringing in my ears more when i am relaxed trying to get asleep, but getting use to it now as i have had problems with my ears now for 20 years! Will this be the end? who knows! :?

Hi akela1981... I am curious as to how your ear has improved/progressed since this surgery. I had a radical Mastoidectomy/Tympanoplasty due to Cholesteatoma eating away everything in its path 2 years ago. I too have battled this for a long time... 37 years to be exact. I have had several surgeries and yet to find anyone who can tell me why I am still having such a terrible time... not an easy answer to find. I am not such a great example of what to expect, I had a very severe case of cholesteatoma that wiped out everything including my hearing. My recovery lasted 10 Weeks... I ended up with a removed ear cannal and spasms in my ear from the titanium bones they implanted. I wake up daily gagging with throbbing pain in my mastoid... even after two years. I can't help but wonder if anyone else has had these symptoms after that surgery. Yet the most baffling question I have is why does the Otologist still tell me there shouldn't be pain, when it is clearly painful. Frustrating to say the least.

I had the same op in feb this year canal wall down so my ear drum made bigger so they can check and see if the cholesteatoma comes back, apparently according to the dr it has less chance coming back to if they had done canal wall up.Unfortunately for me i had a brain abcess back in April 2013 and had a craniotomy to drain as its situated in part of the brain thats to dangerous to remove.Anyway getting back to ear pain i am gettting it also in the other ear which they say nothing is wrong and only recently started getting achy ear on the operated one and i am thinking why now!!!!.Again the cholesteatoma had eaten away after years and years of suffering with smelly horrible discharge and it now feels like something is in my ear.I had this op done as they thought my brain abcess could have been caused from this but they still don't know for sure.Unlike you i don't have inplants and in actual fact my surgeon said he doesn;t really think inplants really help and thats why i didn't have it done.I had a dr come from the uk to perform this op as no dr in Cyprus has the experience for this type of op and they have an arrangrment to use dr's from overseas to come here if needed and funnily enough he was cypriot who actually comes every so often to perform these ops in the local general hospital here in Nicosia.
