Cholesterol drug recommendation.

Hi. about 2 years ago my cholesterol was 237, and I took Atorvastin which made me nauseated. Internist would change dosage so I changed internists. I went on red rice yeast which lowered my rating to 171, but caused insomnia, which also created physical and mental sluggishness. I guess this is why we have so many statins, to find one that works for you. I heard there was a new statin which has few side effects. Thanks Fred

Hello Fred did the doctor give u time to lower the level before putting u on medication? I had a couple of test that shows high cholesterol level of 225 but instead of going straight to medication my doctor suggested me to excersise and watch my diet . I followed her advice and also eat red rice like u and my level went down to 178 the last test I took in May 2017. Is it dangerous or risky that I didn't take medication for it last time? I wish u the best and hope we both can get the number down and down take care and look forward to your reply.

Julie, Thanks for responding. No the Dr didn't give me a chance to reduce cholesterol without medication. If you are not having side effects with red rice yeast and it keeps your Cholesterol within normal limits stay with it, because it is natural. How long have you been on RRY , what dosage level are you taking, and when do you take it. ?I was told to take RRY at night because that is when your body manufactures Cholesterol. For most people that works fine. But in a few cases it causes insomnia, which is what it did for me. I would go to sleep at 11-11:30 PM and then wake up at 3AM and not be able to get back to sleep. This had been going on for months and I became physical and mentally sluggish. Last Friday I didn't take any RRY at all, took an Advil PM for sleep, and had tons of energy Saturday. Sun night I didn't take RRY, and took it this morning. One hour later I had headaches and grogginess. I called the doctor's office and a nurse said to quit taking RRY until you see a doctor. I told her I will take a half dose in the morning and I will be seeing an endocrinologist Friday. I will let the group know what the endo says.

Fred I want to thank you for asking this question because I did not know that red rice yeast wood drop my cholesterol. I've been wanting to get off my cholesterol medicine for years but I'm very bad at following a diet. How do you add the red rice yeast to your diet? Also do you have elevated triglycerides? That's one of my big problems and I wonder if this red rice yeast would lower that too?

Hi Fred, please share how long you had to take the red yeast rice to see results. I tried it years ago but my side effects were similar to those of the statins. I was in a different place in my life and I'm thinking about taking it again. My triglycerides are good; HDL is on the lower end of good; however, my total cholesterol and LDL are high. I cannot take statins but I'm looking for natural alternatives.
