Chondromalacia Patellae

Posted , 3 users are following.

I was told I had chondromalacia patellae in June 2016 and have tried physio but too painful to do even thou I am on painkillers paracetamol & tramadol the maximum daily amount. I had a cortisone injection but not helpful & I have rheumatoid arthritis too. Is there anything else I can try or speak to my rheamatalogy consultant about.

Thanks

Hi Karen, can I ask you how old are you? I am 38 and just been diagnosed. What is your pain like? I am struggling on my feet even a few hours. Did you have an arthroscopy done?

I am struggling so much . I was very fit . Now even after a few hours I need to ice my knees. It is the only thing that works for me.

Anti inflammatory meds makes no difference. Even cocodamol I usually use for migraine doesn’t work. Have you ever been referred to orthopaedic specialist?

Hi Dadka, I am 35. The pain varies from day to day some days it's really painful even thou I am taking paracetamol & tramadol. Apparently there's no treatment for this so ive been told by my rheamatalogy consultantother than pain relief & physio. I saw someone from orthopaedic triage a year ago who said I should have a cortisone injection which I did but not helpful. On bad days I'm having to ice my knee too which gives some relief for a while.

Hi Karen, it sound awful, I hoped to find someone with satisfactory results , someone who can still do some of sport activities I loved so much... soneone who doesn’t take painkillers all the time. Someone who give me hope.,..Now I can’t even work. I am managing without painkillers as Antiinflamatory medication, or Paracetamol and Codeine, doesn’t seem to work. Ice helps, but sometimes it’s so nice so I completely forget I have it on my knees for good hour. I am worrying that can cause more damage too. Did u have your condromalacia confirmed on MRI? I have heard that knee arthroscopy can help people with pain.

Hi Dadka, yes I had the chondromalacia patellae diagnosed by the person I saw in orthopaedic triage in June 2017 by my MRI scan but been off work since Dec 2016. I haven't worked since then. I was told 9 months ago by my rheamatalogy consultant that walking is good for this condition which I've done alot of. If I walk too far then the pain sets in. Apparently this should get better overtime which for it hasn't, sorry I can't be much help x

    Just my opninion

But toss those pain killers if at this point they are not working and continually ice knee after activity.

If you have extra weight on you try to shed it bc every extra lb on your knee will just place more force on it.

    How strong are your quads?

Strengthening your thighs specifically on a bike or 45 degree squats with a stability ball will help keep form and not place pressure on knee.

If all else fails you may be looking st surgery sadly.

Haven't actually been told what stage it is at but I'm seeing my rheamatalogy consultant in an hour or so so I'm hoping she may say what to do next
