I am told my dominant eye is my right eye, but my left eye can't see curbs on my driver side, so I am wondering how critical choosing the distance eye is for that.

My distance eye is my right eye. I don't have any issues seeing off to my left. A curb is relatively close so you should not have issues seeing that far away with the near eye. What I find driving is that overall I have more peripheral vision without glasses than I do with prescription eyeglasses.
