Chronic Bacterial Vaginosis - More specialists

Hi,

I have been battling BV for over a year. Tried flagyl pills, metro gel, long term maintenance metrogel, boric acid vaginal capsules for 14 days straights (which did help a lot) and then once a week boric acid for months. I have also been tested for every other disease under the sun (ureaplasma, etc). My obgyn is running another batch of tests again just in case.

I still came back positive for BV after my last urogyn visit. My urogyn has now suggested I visit a vaginal vaginitis specialist which I have set up an appt for November. I have never had issues with BV, but since I started perimenopause it has been chronic. I usually can feel it getting worse around my period and ovulation.

Questions for the forum"

  1. Have any of your found success with a vaginal vaginitis or infectious disease specialist? If so, what was the treatment?
  2. Have any of you used silver nitrate or collodial silver and it worked? How much did you use and how did you apply it?
  3. Were any of you successful by being treated with hormone therapy? If so, how.
  4. Did anyone have their BV disappear when menopause hit?

Thanks,

Jen

      Hi Kim,

Thanks for responding with your success - you are so lucky! I tried asking both my obgyn and my urogyn about trying other antibiotics and they refused saying if the metrogel didn't work or the maintenance metrogel/flagyl pills didn't work - all other antibiotics wouldn't be successful. 😦 I go see Dr. Nyirjesy in Center City Phila at the end of November. He is supposed to be the only expert on vaginosis in my area - and I am praying he can come up with a solution. I really think my hormones are out of whack due to perimenopause and that is why I keep getting it. The boric acid capsules really do knock down the infection to where it is manageable. I am going to try another round of the boric acid before I see him right after my next period.

I agree with you. Hopefully the new doctor will be open to other treatments.

1.) I hear vaginitis specialists don't mess around. I've never been, but my doctor told me about them if my infection was anymore persistent (I'm cured). So what these guys do is they collect specimens from your vagina with a swab and view it under a microscope to find what exactly is causing the BV. They're pretty thorough when looking too. Once they've found the culprit, they then give you antibiotics that will kill the species of that particular bacteria. I'm not sure what they'll give you because it all depends on what you have.

2.) I would refrain from using anything other than what the doctor is giving you because that could potentially worsen your infection. Plus, you have to consider that you do have good bacteria in your vagina. You can't just use any antibacterial remedy in hopes that you're gonna get rid of the problem. It usually doesn't work.

3.) hormones may be a cause for your chronic BV and it won't hurt you to just try. I would also, if you're not, try taking probiotics containing lactobacillus. This will promote the growth of good bacteria and may help prevent infection. Oh! Most importantly, know your triggers. Some of us will keep on getting an infection if we don't understand what's throwing our pH off. It could be anything but usually it's something simple that can be avoidable or treated (ie hormones).

4.) I'm nowhere near menopause so I can't answer that for you, but if you sift through the BV forums and comments you will find answers.

Thanks for your thoughts on my chronic bv. What finally cured you? My urogynocologist was really good with checking for multiple bacteria including uroplasma/mycoplasma, etc. I know I keep getting my test results showing gardnella bacteria. I do remember that the specialist can really drill down even more to see exactly what bacteria you have. I am really hoping for a long term solution. I have so many perimenopause symptoms including hot flashes/cold flashes, pounding heart beat, increased heart rate, short term memory issues, shorter periods where I feel like I am getting my period every two weeks. I just want to move to menopause and hope to eliminate some of these symptoms.

Oh I forgot to say that the boric acid was prescribed by my urogynocologist as her last option. 😦

jen78653 I am so sorry you are having trouble. I am suspicious that hormones are the reason for my symptoms too. I haven't tried any of the things you mentioned but I will be looking into them. Please keep me posted! BTW are you on birth control? My urogyn mentioned its known for decreasing estrogen in the vag.

Thank you for your reply. why do you also believe your bv is related to hormones? i am not in birth control, but i am deep in perimenopause as i have every symptom and they are getting worse. what treatments have you tried? My symptoms almost all gone from bv if i use the boric acid, but i still test positive for it. at this point all i have left is the one last specialist and my boric acid πŸ˜ƒ. i have read that for some woman it finally disappeared after they went into menopause and they stopped having dramatic shifts in estrogen. i know i have that as i am spotting now, my periods are two days l. It is like i am constantly in PMS. πŸ˜ƒlong and come every 23 to 24 days
