Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and The Thyroid

After having CFS for over 25 years now, I have noticed that my symptoms have gotten worse. I've been searching and searching for a cause or reason why. Through my search, I discovered that while my TSH levels (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) were within the normal range, my Free T 3 levels were extremely low and sometimes even below the normal range. So, I searched CFS and low T3 levels and found some interesting articles on the subject. The findings are very new, but they are finding that some people with CFS actually have low levels of certain thyroid hormones and that this could help treat some of the symptoms. Anyone else heard this or experienced thyroid problems? Thanks, KPD

I have thyroid problems. I was diagnosed recently with hashimoto's though it has greatly improved since I've been working on my liver. It's weird because I have so many symptoms of hyPERthyroid but my blood tests show hyPOthyroid. I can't remember at the moment where I put my latest blood test results so I don't know if my T3 is high or low but if I remember correctly I think it's below the normal range but has improved.

Thanks for sharing, DiannaO. Do you have both Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Hashimoto's? If so, by treating the hashi, are you feeling better? KPD

Yes, I was diagnosed with cfs four years ago. Just a year ago my blood tests showed up Hashimotos and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. This FLOORED me because I weigh about 95 pounds and can't tolerate much fat. They wanted to give my thyroid meds, but I can't take medications because my system is extremely sensitive and it's always been that way even before I was diagnosed with cfs. So, I spoke with a functional doctor and she said the problem is NOT the thyroid, it originates in the liver being toxic. She said that if I could do stuff to help my liver, than the thyroid will also clear up. So, I went to youtube and I just started doing anything and everything I could do holistically for non alcoholic fatty liver and it has taken a good year but my liver enzymes are almost in the normal range and the Hashimotos looks much better. I think slowly it is also helping the cfs. I will keep doing what I'm doing, I can give you a list if you'd like to know, and I'm guessing that things will continue to improve.

Glad to hear that you are feeling somewhat better. I was diagnosed with CFS about 25 years ago and had done well managing my symptoms until a few years ago when I started going through hormonal changes. That's when I searched to find out what could causing the symptoms to flare up. I'm also seeing a functional medicine doctor who is trying to help sort all of this out. I'm also extremely sensitive to all medicines and am not over weight. Would love to know what you are taking that might be helping. Thanks 😃 KPD

Wow, there are definitely some similarities here. I actually think I've had CFS most of my life, though probably a milder form. I never could work full time even in my twenties. I always had to take "recovery days" whenever I did much of anything. It got really bad when I started to go into menopause and began a very stressful part time job as an office administrator for my church. Things went very downhill after a car accident and a staph infection. Let me know what you learn from your functional MD. I can no longer see mine because she left the area and there are no other ones around. I have tried all kinds of hormone replacement therapies and even natural hormones but everything is way too strong for me. I even tried just one drop of CBD oil and my blood pressure went way too low.

I have no problem taking melatonin for sleep, tho, (it doesn't always help) and sometimes lemon balm. I also take vitamin D drops, sublingual methyl B12, and all one multi vitamin powder. For IBS I take DGL, charcoal, enzymes and probiotics. For the liver/thyroid I take choline and inositol as well as milk thistle. I meditate 2 times a day and I try to exercise as much as possible which is tricky but it helps me sleep! I put Frankencense oil on my thyroid area in the morning and Castor oil on the gut with a hot water bottle at night. The biggest thing is keeping regular and I found rice bran to be really helpful along with drinking lots of water. I've eliminated wheat, dairy, sugar. 50% of my meals are vegetables (I have to cook most of them) and then I be sure to eat moderate amounts of low glycemic carbs and lots of lean protein. I juice lots of celery with a small amount of beets and carrots every morning before breakfast. Fruit 2 times a day. Himalaya sea salt for the adrenals and low blood pressure. I started up the acupuncture again and want to keep doing body work as much as my finances will allow (massage, chiropractic, etc). I think that's the basic stuff.

    Hi kpd,

There's been quite a few members who have mentioned thyroid issues on discussions I've read. I can't tell you names or discussion titles as my memory isn't good for things like that at the moment. you could flick through titles I guess?
