Chronic Gastritis for 5 months - no cause found

Finally had an endoscoy. It shows chronic Gastritis, inflammation and blood. I've done so many other tests, but found nothing. I have no idea where this chronic Gastritis came from and it happened the week after I came back from Cayman Islands. All my h pylori tests showed negative (stool, blood, breath, biopsy) and so did my parasite tests. I am clueless. I make all my own meals like ground turkey, banana, boiled eggs, fruits, veggies, etc. I don't know what else to do. I tried Nexium for 2 weeks and it didn't help with anything. So am I missing something? Do I need to do a colonoscopy or check for ovarian cancer via ultrasound? My GI doctor (who had excelellent review and many years of experience) said that Gastritis is a funny thing because sometimes it never really heals.

    Hi,

I too suffer from chronic gastritis and the doctors have been no help. What I have discovered is that it can be due to small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, which is the case for me. I'm treating this with diet as I don't want to be on permanent antibiotics. If you suffer from bloating and intermittent diarrhea and cobstipation this may be you too. I'm doing the specific carbohydrate diet although FODMAPs is good too.

I have normal bowel movements. The doctor wants me to try Flagyl and antibiotic. Just to see if that helps. I feel that if I take it, it will kill the good bacteria in my gut. Flagyl kills Small Bacterial Overgrowth. But frome what you say it could take awhile. I am sad to hear that Gastritis can't be healed.

I think you're right about the antibiotics and people on the net report that the SIBO comes back when they eat normally. I managed to get rid of it a few years ago by being really strict for months on end and I actually went 18 months with no symptoms even though I was eating normally. unfortunately I went back to my old bad habits and a holiday in the Carribean (rum cocktails) sent me back to square one. I've been struggling ever since. However I've decided I've got to be reallty strict and when I get rid of it this time I'm going to keep it away. i don't think Gastritis can't be cured it's just difficult to cure.

i am taking Antibiotics. The doctor wanted me to try them. I don't think its helping. Acid Blockers cause me intense anxiety so that makes it 100 times harder to heal.

Aha!! so it's your problem too! I've just discovered the work of a microbiolgist, he worked in the pharmaceutical industry before and when he got sibo he started investigating the biological make up of food. His findings are very interesting for us, basically he's discovered that the potential fermentability of carbs is the key (if it ferments in your gut it feeds the bacteria) but the good news is not all carbs do this, Jasmin rice is diffrent to other rice and is quickly digested without lingering in the small intestine, butternut squash is the same. I've ordered his book to find out more.

Hi, I am new to this site. I was reading your post about acid blocker is causing you in Intense anxiety. I was wondering if you could explain a little more about that because I cannot take Flagyl or Cipro because when I did five years ago I woke up in the middle of the night screaming with anxiety and I've suffered from it ever since. It frightens me now to take any type of medicine.

Since the beginning of October, I've had a major upper stomach problems that started with the pain by my bellybutton and just went all the way up into my chest. I've been to the ER twice, they did a CT scan and found I had a small hiatal hernia. but I was still having major pain but kept getting worse and worse. I was at the mall a couple weeks ago at my jewelers and my chest was hurting so bad and I couldn't breathe and I was dizzy they almost called the ambulance. I had to sit there for almost a half an hour. I finally got an endoscopy done. The doctor says I have a small hiatal hernia and a small stomach ulcer that's by my hiatal hernia that could be causing the problems. they did a biopsy and I should've got the results last week but the girls in the doctors office are so incompetent. I told them to have the doctor call me back because I need to know what's going on and I never told him and he's only in the office Mondays and Tuesdays. and because of my insurance I can only see him once a month because he's a specialist. but I'm calling Monday morning and if I have to go down there I don't care because I have to know the results it's getting worse and worse. It's Thanksgiving and I can barely eat anything and my stomach hurts so bad. And I have the worst taste in my mouth on and off for the last month and a half since this is been happening. but I'm really curious about your anxiety with the medicine because I know he wanted to put me on Nexium.
