Chronic nausea for 15 years, still no answers!

Hi all.

I'm posting this in the hope that someone can relate and offer some sort of help or advice as this has gone on far too long!

I'm a 25 year old female and I've had spells of almost constant nausea since I was around 10 years old. When I was younger it got to the point where I would just not eat (not helpful!) for fear of being sick, as I've grown up I've almost accepted that feeling sick is a part of my life now and I try to carry on/eat as normal unless I have a particularly bad "flare up". However I really shouldn't have to live like this!

When I first complained of it my parents took me to the doctors numerous times and at a very young age, after complaining the nauseous feeling was at the back of my throat, I was told I had reflux and given lansaprozole. When it didn't work whatsoever my dose was doubled until my mother actually complained that I was being given such a high dosage at a young age!

After this I just tried to put up with it. My final year at high school I was mostly off school feeling unwell! I struggled through but by the time I got to university I was fed up. I went back to the docs and this time was diagnosed with IBS and prescribed mebeverine. The most this did for me was reduce the gas and bloating that came with my upset stomachs but after a month of taking it it actually gave me nausea EVERY single day til I stopped it!

In recent years after finally realising how much this has been ruling my life, along with realising how bad my symptoms can get - nausea, upset stomach, dizziness, fatigue, headaches etc and sometimes feeling sick to the point of thinking I'm going to be physically sick, only to burp! I've finally gone to the docs several more times.

I've tried domperidone which helped a little but I was eventually taken off it as I still felt unwell, I tried omeprazole (mostly to please docs as they still insist its reflux) and was recently given erythromycin which I never took after a consultant was horrified I'd been prescribed it in the first place.

I've had a endoscopy which revealed I have a hiatus hernia (my dad has one too so must be hereditary) however I very very rarely get heartburn or any kind of reflux and my symptoms are not related! It also revealed an inflamed stomach lining but nothing else. I've also had a stomach emptying test which came back normal, I've been tested for helicobacter pylori NUMEROUS times over the 15 years and most recently I've had an ultrasound scan of my liver and gallbladder. I was referred to a consultant in the past few months who believes my symptoms are not stomach related, hence liver etc tests! I'm still awaiting blood tests but no word yet. Im meant to get referred to a G.I but again no word yet.

The most recent tests have been over a span of one year so it's a terribly slow process! I have infact just been told my next appointment with the consult is 7 months from now which is frankly ridiculous. Hence I've come here!

I would greatly appreciate any help with this as its starting to take over my life! I've had years with no nausea at all but this has been over a year now with almost constant nausea. I've also been tested for celiac disease which came back negative, I've bizarrely never had stools tested despite upset stomachs and I've tried a lacto-free diet for two weeks which made no difference! I additionally tried to eat 100% healthily/no processed foods etc for two weeks which equally made no difference, still chronic nausea and fatigue!

Any suggestions on what this could be would be massively appreciated!

I’ve been following this post for about a year: My 12-year-old daughter became ill almost two years ago, and we may have finally found a solution. She began suffering nausea daily after what we thought was a stomach bug. We took her to her primary care doctor and about a month into this, all labs (bloodwork and stool samples) came back unremarkable. Again, her primary symptom was nausea/decreased appetite, but she began to notice what we thought was some kind of reflux as well as something she referred to as “bubbles” (sensation in the gut and rising in her throat), occasional stomach pain, and occasional headaches. She became a very anxious person because she so often felt unwell and worried that she would vomit at school. She ended up getting two endoscopies, was diagnosed with gastritis, reflux, functional abdominal pain, etc. She was prescribed ondansetron, and told to take omeprazole for 3 mos (and then for a fourth mos when her symptoms continued). At the end of the 4th mos, her GI doc ordered allergy testing which was negative. The nausea and reflux persisted, and headaches and feeling unwell became more frequent. she was also taking antacids. I finally took her out of state to another GI doc who diagnosed her at our initial visit with abdominal migraines. I was somewhat familiar with abdominal migraines because of all the previous research I had done trying to figure out how to help her. The doc said she fits both cyclic vomiting syndrome and abdominal migraines - there’s a lot of overlap in the two, and you do NOT have to vomit to fit the criteria. He said some people just fight the vomiting part and contend primarily with nausea. Others have predominantly pain, as many of the articles about abdominal migraines will state. My daughter would also get pale and clammy now and then, have an occasional day or two every other month or so where she was utterly fatigued, chilled, and achey, and then be over it in 24 to 36 hours (except for the nausea, of course). I couldn’t figure it out. This new GI doc prescribed a low dose of amitriptyline (commonly used for depression at higher doses, but also for migraines at lower doses). He also highly recommended a good sleep routine. We’re coming up on two weeks since beginning the medication, and I’m more hopeful than I’ve ever been. It’s difficult - we’ve been down this road so many times only to be disappointed, but this is the longest period of time that she has done well. This is the most energized she’s been, her appetite is great, and I feel like I have my happy-go-lucky child back. I’m praying that this persists, and optimistic enough that I wanted to share with others on this board. I sincerely hope this helps you or someone else out there. It’s been a long road for us, and I know you and many others have struggled far longer. All the best to you.

Thank you for this! The bubbles is exactly what I used to experience but the doctors kept calling it anxiety!

I hope she is feeling better now!

I am so happy to have found this forum. My Daughter now 15 years old and has suffered from nausea since she was 10. Has seen GI and had Scope/US/Abd XR and cut out dairy and gluten and no change. She has had several labs/H Pylori done all negative. She has seen a Endocrinologist and GYN and everything has come back normal. We are currently seeing a Neurologists who thinks it is possible Abdominal Migraine and started her on a round of Nortriptyline low dose. Its been 1 week of taking it and it has helped her sleep well and increased her appetite as she was not eating well. We are getting an MRI done this week to check for anything in the brain. But it has been so frustrating and heart breaking to see her have to go through this and nothing has helped so far. She is at the point of giving up which is scary. She feels alone and thinks no one else has had this experience.

Please share what was used in your IV medication that stopped your nausea, My son is experiencing this for 5 years off and on.

Since your stomach lining was inflamed, was gastritis ever mentioned? Maybe ask for a stool test since this hasn't been done.

I've since had stool tests after getting really sick (really bad stomach and losing lots of weight out of nowhere) and they still came back completely normal.

I've almost completely stopped pursuing it with my doctor as every test comes back perfectly healthy so I'm learning just to deal with it as best I can!

I haven't read everyone's replies but has low stomach acid been mentioned. I know I have been having all these things and been told I have "silent reflux" no acid feeling but the acid going on makes you feel nauseated, dizzy, headache. Have you tried any digestive enzymes?

I have tried some but not for very long. I got really sick and when I took them I actually felt sicker so I stopped 😦 no idea if it was just the bad flare up I was having or the actual probiotics! Hopefully someone else has had better luck than me!

did you find out what caused it? Ive been suffering for months with nausea, i can have one really good day but then i could suffer with it again for the next few days. I haven't been able to go out anywhere because i feel sick. I do have a fear of feeling sick so this is obviously making me feel worried everyday. I have been to the doctors and had blood tests done but all came back negative. Anyone able to help??

Unfortunately still no answers which is not what people reading this will be hoping for 😦

The main things I have found to help are eating fresh where possible as in no processed/frozen/ready meal type foods. I even make rich meals like chilli and bolognese with lean meat and I'm usually completely fine.

I try and reduce stress as much as possible and get good sleep in. I've figured out food triggers through elimination but unfortunately still get caught out with mystery flare ups.

It is much calmer than what it was, I can live almost a totally normal life but do have a couple of bad days here and there. My anxiety had reduced and my flare ups have reduced as a result. I'm due to get married this year and thankfully have got to a point where I no longer worry about being unwell.

I hope this helps and you feel better soon!

I'm 36 years old, identify as female, and was born female. I've had trouble with chronic nausea for years. Had a colonoscopy and endoscopy, been tested for allergies and parasites, had imaging done. Everything always comes back normal. I've tried gluten-free, dairy-free, low FODMAP, and plant-based diets, as well as a variety of meds. Nothing seems to change. I have depression, although I manage it fairly well most of the time with the help of counseling, medication, and self-care. I don't really struggle with anxiety, however. In fact, my work is in an unpredictable and high-stress field and I really enjoy it. I can't really remember when this problem with chronic nausea started, so it must have been gradual? But now it's everyday and has been for years. Anyway, it's exhausting and frustrating and depressing and has negatively impacted my career and relationships over the years.

I wish I had something helpful to add. Just sharing my experience. I hope you find relief soon.

Can we be friends? i seriously feel like i could have written this. i found your post when I was on yet another Google search trying to find out what the heck could be wrong with ME. Eugh! So familiar. i am a 37 year old mom of one, and have been struggling with chronic nausea/indigestion for about a year and a half now. At first it lasted about 6 weeks and went away for a few months, but its been back for a good 6 months now. My anxiety and depression is at an all time high. I am struggling. I have lost weight. I would not wish this on my worst enemy. I have had tons if blood tests, the h pylori breath test, two abdominal ultrasounds, and am currently trying "all the medications" while I wait for the dreaded scope, which js 6 more weeks away. Zantac, Pepcid, Tagamet, Prilosec, Nexium, and now Prevacid. I feel like they make me worse? The nausea starts during or shortly after eating usually, and it feels like a "pressure" or a need to burp. I have not gone to a restaurant in over a year, and cant bring myself to eat with people anymore. 😦

Honestly I posted this so long ago and its so nice to hear its not just me. It's absolutely bizarre hearing people even having things like the throat bubbles and weird stomach sensations and knowing I'm not the only one!

The medication that worked best for me is ondansetron (think the brand name is zofran), literally a life saver! I used to call it my magic pill as i could feel sick to the point of wanting to throw up and these would wipe it out in half an hour. I have managed to reduce taking them to the point I've probably not had one in over a year.

I've figured out some food triggers such as leeks (really weird!) and reheated food. Occasionally a takeaway or something will make me really unwell when my partner is absolutely fine so I'm very careful of which ones I use. I believe its probably to do with bacterial levels or some sort of gut imbalance hence why food that may have been reheated or isn't cooked or prepared in the very best way can set me off sometimes for days e.g. a McDonald's (which is generally very safe since its a huge chain and will have strict requirements) made me sick for 2-3 weeks. I just avoid it entirely now!

I generally won't eat meat or anything that can be poorly prepared unless I'm cooking it. If I cook meat it is only lean cuts and I'll only ever reheat once and that's it, if its more than a day old I won't eat it. I try and cook with fresh ingredients where possible and it has helped immensely. Things such as processed meat (frozen chicken etc) or ready meals I completely avoid now.

I try and get full nights sleep if i have something important (lack of sleep makes me feel really hot, dizzy and sick!) and sometimes a glass of water can clear the beginnings of a day of nausea and i just consistently sip water throughout the day to manage it. It seems mad but the only way I could explain it to my doctor is that when its really bad i feel poisoned, like so utterly nauseous and tired and achey. Sometimes water just helps keep it at bay til i can get home!

By getting it under control my anxiety has completely calmed down as a result. It was a really bad circle of sickness triggering anxiety and anxiety triggering sickness! I am on the pill though as I have been diagnosed with endometriosis so the pill was actually a big cause of anxiety and weird brain fog for me, I got swapped to a new one and it was like a switch went off for my anxiety! Unfortunately the new one has caused weight gain and specific days of nausea though so thats a new issue to contend with!

I hope you feel better soon!! Hopefully some of what i have said helps!
