Chronic Pancreatitis

Hi, Angie from Minnesota. I had my first bout of Pancreatitis last week and thought I had the stomach flu! I'm 51. After a week of Bland diet, I started to feel better, had a big ole pizza and drinks the following Friday night ...still ok, by Monday I was sick as a dog again. So I went in to urgent care. My Lipase was 2250 and they said I had to go to the hospital for 1 to 3 days. Like everyone else, drs assumed i was a raging alcoholic. I do like to drink, but I'm a social drinker, nothing else. I was on the fasting diet and I think that had something to do with it. Plus I've been extremely stressed out and very dehydrated. I was out of the hospital in one day and back to Lipase of 188. Im now freaked out about having another one. I'm one day out of the hospital and actually feel just weak, not a lot of pain, not on pain meds and went back to work with kids in fact. What I'm worried about is my diarrhea and how long that will last. I'm urinating all the time, so thats good. I'm not going to drink for 6 months...or at least try. I can't belive that is the main cause. I have an autoimmune disorder, wonder if that has somthing to do with it. I also had a high fat diet. Now I will not be doing that, nor fasting or drinking. So happy I found this forum, I was in tears at the hospital and felt all alone. On another note, my sister said our mom also had it, and I forgot about that.

    Hi Angie,

I'm Sonya I'm really glad you found this site and wrote. Everyone on here is very supportive and helpful. They always assume alcohol. It's very frustrating if that isn't the case. The first time I had it, it was the same thing. My lipase was up in the 15,000's and I thought I would die. After a zillion tests over a month, they discovered my gall bladder wasnt working. Because of that I just never got fully back to normal. Tons of acute attacks that turned into Chronic Pancreatitis. I'm glad youre better but surprised they let you out after one day with elevated lipase and no pain meds.

I hope this never happens to you again. Did they give you a cause? If it was alcohol, just give it up. It isnt worth it and stick to a low fat diet. They did all the scans on you? What was their conclusion? I'm sorry you felt alone but now you know you can write anytime. We are all here for you.

    Be well,

    Sonya

hi hi there can I ask you how you found out and what the doctor said? I just now found out tonight that I have pancreatitis but I don't know if it's acute or chronic. I went to urgent Care so I have to wait a few days to see my primary and I'm really concerned and don't know what this means.

The way I found out is I had a severe stomach/vomiting attack! Thought I had stomach virus. Then I was ok for a week, then it happened again after I ate some eggs...so went to urgent care and my number was 2200. 73-393 is the range. So they made me go to the hospital. I was super de-hydrated, had a high fat diet and was also doing the fasting diet. I think that led to it. I'm not a heavy drinker, but did have a cocktail every night, not over drinking, the last few months. I separated from my husband and was going through a rough patch. So a lot of changes in a 2 month period. I completely changed my diet, barely drink, but do have a few here and there, and I've been fine. I drink a ton of water now. Oh...and lower back pain, that's probably the worst I have right now.
