I had been a alcohol drinker for twenty plus years, but I recently quit. I notice pain on right side bottom of my rib cage. The pain is not bad enough to send you to the ER but it's nagging. I do notice after I eat fried or greasy food the pain comes. I'am now a dietabic because of drinking. My stools or oily and float, and I be constipated a lot so I take Latulose. I see my gastro doctor in two weeks, what test should he do. what do you guys think? what should I do??? thanks in advance for the good advice!!!

    Hi Mark,

It sounds like pancreatitis to me. But, then I'm not an expert. I suffer from acute pancreatitis. The pain I had originally was bad enough to send me into the hospital . Afterwards, I had and still continue to have a nagging pain as you describe. alcohol was the basis of my problem although I drank only occasionally.Fatty foods are also hard to digest .I had various scans in the hospital. A CT scan, abdominal X ray and blood tests for amlayse and lipase which are produced by the pancreas. Later  I had an ultra sound scan. I spent four/five days in the hospital without eating to rest the pancreas and was told not to drink alcohol and to avoid fatty foods, eat little and more often not ot overtax the pancreas. I found later that digestive enxymes helped to limit the pain I get. So, good luck to you and I hope you will feel better soon.

Mark all the symptoms you are describing are similar to pancratitis, however my pain is on the left where the pancreas is not on the right where you describe.  I went to see the specialist this weekend, he confirmed that it indeed is pancreatitis, Chronic Mild Pancreatitis due to alcohol.  I saw the GI first then the NP, she is the one who had me do this test and sure enough, it was my pancreas which I have asked 5 different GI physicians for the past 15 years and all said it was IBS.  I do not have oily and floaty stools, the only symptom I had was left upper quadrant, under the rib cage pain,  Severe pain especially at night and a fast heart rate which sent me to a cardiologist.  This whole time it was my pancreas.  I too have quit drinking.  Not just anyone does an EUS test that I had.  That stands for Endoscopic Ultra Sound a specailized test.  I got lucky that this specialist doctor was in the same paractice as my GI.    It is not reversable, its has scared me. I am also being checked for Pancreatic Cancer which pancreatitis can lead to if severe.  Wish you the best.
