Chronic Pancreatitis possible? Or is it something else? Struggling to find answers

Hi everyone- like a lot of you on the forum, I am at my witts end trying to figure out what ailment and/or disease I have. To be brief, my symptoms started in August of 2014 when I started to notice upper abdominal pain and tenderness. This was on a weekend where yes, I had been consuming alcohol. I am a healthy 28 year old female and in my younger 20s I did drink more than is recommended. On the onset of symptoms, I went to a doctor who prescribed an anti-acid. I noticed over the next few months my symptoms came and went and I honestly thought nothing of it. I started noticing a change in my bowel movements in October/November (they started to become more loose, float and were more volumous). I have been into see multiple GI specialists who have run a million tests. I've had basic labs done (liver function tests, lipase/amylase, basic metabolic panel, IgA/IgG- celiac seriologies, Vitamin D/B12, Iron studies-- all came back good), an MRCP w/secretin (good), RUQ (good), EGD/EUS (good), fecal elastase > 500 (good)..... but heres he kicker.. a 9g fecal fat (normal is under 7g) with a fecal weight of ~470g (200g of stool is normal output from what I have read). To my knowledge there are only a few diseases that cause a high stool fat and CP is one of them.

My question is.. do any of you experience high fat stools and normal imaging? The doctors seem to think this is all IBS but from what I've read IBS  does not cause high fecal fat.

I am so desperate for answers... I wish they would just find what is causing my discomfort and abnormal stools-- even if that meant a diagnosis of CP.

Please help if any of you can shed some light here!!!!

In November 2014 I returned from my fathers funeral in Cairns ....while I was there I remember feeling as if I'd been hit by a truck for 48 hrs with a fever and loose stools. On my return I noticed a change in bowel movements ,very soft light coloured and with a greasy film on the top of the water. Then I started getting the most awful pain in my back on inspiration ,I would get up in the morning with swelling in my fingers a very stiff painful neck and feeling exhausted .when this all started I weighed 68kg and a year later I am 62..7 kg I am tall and naturally slim .the pain in my back has gone and I am in less pain on waking but the two remaining symptoms ,steatorrhea and weight loss .I have had numerous MRI s ,MRCP FBC Fecal elastase tests and finally giardiasis tests ...all normal and negative .

The steathorrea is on about a ten day cycle and does not seem to be linked to fat intake .Both my GI consultant and GP are at a loss .

The only things that have come up on the MRCP a shadow was seen on the biliary tract over two slices which could suggest a stone and two simple probably benign liver cysts .

At my wits end ! Any idea ...just need to know why this is happening .

Been reading this thread trying to figure out what is wrong with me. After Thankgiving I started with diarrhea. Felt all over lousy and sometimes nauseous. The diarrhea kept hanging on so I called my GI Doctor. I met with his physicians assistant and she ran blood tests and did the deal fat tears over three days. One of the test had high fat. The others were ok. Vitamin D3 was 20 but everything else was ok. I've always had low vitamin D3 and they just put me on a new RX. I had a colonoscopy w/biopsies done and also an endoscopy w/biopsies. He found I had a small esophageal ulcer and gave me Zantac RX for it. He wants to do another endoscopy in three months. This was two months ago. After the colonoscopy he told me I have chronic pancreatitis and gave me a RX for Creon also. I was alittlesurprised at the diagnosis as I was convinced by my symptoms that I had IBS and my mother also had this and mine symptoms were exactly like hers. I went to get the RX and was told the first month would cost $41 and after that it would be $1500. Anyway I didn't feel it was urgent so I passed on it and bought some over the country pancreatic enzymes. The following week the biopsies came back normal. He ordered a CT scan w/contrast which also came back normal. I asked about IBS and he said he's not changing his diagnosis. I have chronic Pancreatitis and EPI. But all test are negative. I feel fine. Not sick, no diarrhea, no floaty stool, no oil in the toilet,  I have never been a drinker and quit smoking 21 years ago. I am not losing weight, I have tried too lose weigh. I'm still thinking IBS. I have been constipated since I was three years old. I have always off and on gotten bad lower belly pains and within a half hour will have a bowel movement. After that all the pain is relieved. Sometimes it's a very hard stool and sometimes it's followed by a very loose stool within 10 minutes. That still continues but nothing floaty or oily. It can happen monthly or every few months. I've been keeping a food diary and nothing is triggering anything. Will orobably get a second opinion but need a rest from all these tests. Any ideas?

I am really wondering how he can make the diagnosis of Chronic Pancreatitis from a Colonoscopy? I have just recently had a Colonoscopy myself and I am waiting for the results. I have had bloodwork, ultrasound and endoscopy and everything came back normal. So far theyre saying some kind of IBS and really dont believe I have chronic pancreatitis, even though this still worries me. I dont want to write my whole story again. If you are interested you can read it here: https://patient.info/forums/discuss/chronic-pancreatitis--492093?page=0#2036431

But how did your doctor conclude CP from a Colonoscopy?

Yes, that sounds extremely unusual. And - a colonoscopy is not the right tool to diagnose pancreatitis; ultrasound and CP is required for that. But because this is a relatively uncommon disease many doctors are quite ignorant and unaware of that disease and misdiagnose patients. You should definitly consult a pancrea specialist about this because it sounds very unlikable.

After all, there are a lot of diseases that is som odd that there exists no proper name or categorisations for them.

    Hi there.

Suffer from some of the same paranoia and anxiety about CP.

Short: I am 39 years old and suffered from acid reflux since I was a kid. You know; heartburdn that gradually got worse. And 10 years ago I was finally diagnosed with acid reflux and got medication for it.

Anyway, for the last months I have experienced symptoms similar to yours; not violently but still anoying and scary.

The one odd thing though is that I am suffering constipation, not at all diarreah. And the stools are normal when I am able to force them out. Is constipation a symtom of pancreatitis at all? That may points towards IBS. Unlike many of you here; obviously I would be very happy to find out if what I have is only IBS and not the dreadful pancreatitis.

I must also point out that I am a self confesed rabid hypocondriac for many years and I am one of those not denying it. Still, it is harder too look away from the fear of panc because it is a damn hard disease to diagnose. All my blood tests are fine, except for a lack of vitamin D(red flag?). Having ultrasound within 2 weeks. But I have a mild inpersistent pain in upper abdomen, no nausea, no lack if apetite. Some stomach pain but -

I also know for a fact that when you are a rabid hypocondriac your brain is playing tricks on you and cause tense nerves. I have a repeating stich in the throat but I know that is a psychosomatic pain produced by muscle stiffness due to healt anxiety. And helath anxiety may produce symptoms similar to PC when you are scared of it.

For excample - diarreah. Very common in health anxiety. Also variuos muscle pain. And a focus on that particular spot where you first felt pain. Nausea - also but vomitin may be less common. Lack of apetite - DEFINITLY! Fear of having a fatal disease may certainly cause you to loose apetite.

Anyway; I pray to God there is something else than pancreatitis. I am not going in details with symptoms here. I have noticed a slight intolerance to alcohol; but that is far from a dead give away sign of pancreatitis. Still, one night I felt a slight discomfort on my upper left side after drinking; not big; it lasted for some minutes, but still sign enough for concern.

But then again; I have had acid reflux since childhood so that may be connected? I dont know. Any one here with an idea?

Everyone around me is telleing me I am paranoid; none of them ever heard abut pancreatitis or knew anyone with that disease. But I have read so much scaring health information online it scares me stiff. My doctor says it is very unlikely to be pancreatitis and that is ascosciated with more severe pain.

Well this is amazing. I am suffering with the same for 10 years now and nobody can tell me how I got pancreatitis because I have never been a huge Drinker of alcohol. I have the same stools and now it is worse, everytime I eat or drink even the smallest amount I get severe abdominal pain immediately and have to rush to the toilet where my stools are full of fatty mucus and always extremely loose. Now they are always black which means I am bleeding from up high

I know this thread is really old, but was curious if any of you ever got answers. I have been dealing with the same thing for about 5 months now with no answers.
