hi all,
been reading some of your notes on prolapsed disc, i have suffered for over 24 years with prolapsed discs having more than 20 recorded visits to my gp with a prolapsed disc, all the time feeling i was not believed by my gp's but in this last year i theatened to go private for xrays, and suddenly they became availiable to me on the nhs, normal xray should a compressed or flat disc, so i was sent for mri scan which also should 2 prolapsed disc, i have been in almost constant pain or discomfort for 24 years, it affects every aspect of my life but i am turned down for any benefits i was made redundant last august 2008 and no one will employ me with my back condition, i have been on most pain killers and anti-imflamatory medication
i have recently had nerve root block injections, now they are talking of injections directly into the discs, ive been told that surgery is not really sucessful so they dont want to operate on me, all that i would like is to be able to live a nornal life.
regards

I truly do sympathise with your plight, 24 years is a ridiculous amount of time to wait for some proper treatment. Maybe though, back then there wasn't so much available. But that is no excuse for leaving you for all these years with nothing. There is so much that you can try and even a little bit of relief will work wonders. I think that you should shame your GP into doing his absolute utmost to help you now.
And if you can get fit again then you could maybe return to work??? If they are not going to operate then the next best thing is probably going to be physiotherapy at your local hospital. If they do acupuncture I would give that a go as well. But you will need to ask your GP about that, as a special referral. It worked wonders for me. The problem is that when you have disc problems after a while it affects all sorts of other things, such as your muscles and from bad posture your hips and pelvis. A good Chiropractor could help too, but for some reason in my experience Chiropractors and Physiotherapists see things very differently and are almost in competition. You would off course have to pay to see the Chiropractor. As for the drugs, no matter what they give you they are never going to make you better, they will just mask the pain.
The good thing is that at least now you have a firm diagnosis and knowledge is power. Don't let them treat you like this for the next 24 years!! Hopefully this will be your first steps on the road to improvement!!
Best wishes
