Chronic Retention of Urine - Enlarged Prostate

Posted , 15 users are following.

Hi Guys,

New to the forum. Was catheterised due to retention of urine on 23 Jul 14

because of an enlarged prostate.  I am 62 yrs of age, I am not happy to have the catheter on, but I have been told that it needs to stay in till I have my Turp operation.

I have been on the "waiting list" for almost 7 weeks, it seems strange to me that no priority is given to those on catheters.

It could be a while till I have my operation, does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can go about getting this operation on the NHS quicker rather than later?

And any views would be appreciated on the newer treatment called "Greenlight Laser".

Kind Regards

Barry

Can I just say that this is a really useful thread as I am going through the AUR situation and am in line for hoLEP near the end of this month (April '17). Still stuck with a catheter for about 10 weeks now and mighty sick of it but the comments in here are a great help.

I hope all the folk who pitched in are doing well now?

      Hello Ian,

Have you considered self catherization as an alternative to being hooked up to a Foley? If that doesn't appeal to you, what about asking for a suprapubic catheter. No tubes in the urethra, better tolerated and less incidence of UTIs.

Hi Jim, thanks for those suggestions but for various reasons it is impossible to do self catherisation. I am keen to just get past this issue and lead a 'normal' life as i would guess all of us are.

You should look into a suprapubic then, if you haven't already. No tubes in the urethra and no bags with the Flip-Flo valve.
