Chronic urticaria

Hi, writing in desperation. Been suffering with chronic hives for a year now. Had inconclusive blood test results and consultant dermatologist just says it's chronic hives. Have been taking anti histamines consistently but causing heart palpitations however every time I stop taking them the itching starts again. Been to see a Chinese herbalist who has prescribed herbal tea and Acupuncture but it's so expensive. Has anyone else suffered with this and recovered? If so what worked for you?

Why are you sure the palpitations are being caused by the anti histamine? do you have other ongoing health issues?

Hi Margaret, thanks for replying. Not sure. Read the leaflet that comes with the medication and says can cause irregular and fast heart rate. when I stop taking them the palpitations lessen. Vic

Hi, I have the same complaint but do not take Citirizine every day. It varies: sometimes every 5-6 days some others 2-3 days. I don't get the palpitations, though. it's a very distressing condition and a friend of mine who also has it, was told that it could depend to hormonal changes after the menopause. I don't know whether you are are man or a woman so it may not apply to you. Fact is that I have researched the subject extensively and still haven't found the cause and the therapy for this auto immune complaint. It looks like it's going to be ant histamines for ever. Maybe someone else has some ideas and hopefully will reply.

I meant .. it may depend on hormonal changes and I agree that you ought to investigate the cause of palpitations or perhaps change the antihistamine.

Hi, thanks for replying. Yes it's misery. I'm a woman, 42, still have regular periods and have been trying to get pregnant for all my life really. only just got diagnosed with endometriosis in the last year and had a lap and dye a year ago. a year on still no signs of natural conception and a round of unsuccessful ivf so resigning myself to the fact that I am and possibly always have been infertile. not sure if menopause as don't have any other signs of it yet. my mum hit menopause after 50 so always assumed I will have a bit of time yet but I guess we are all different. just perplexed as to why I have this horrid condition now and what's triggered it. could be stress but why does it appear when I'm not stressed? I can only go 2 -3 days without taking the tablets before it becomes unbearable. itchy everyone even where I can't see any welts or hives coming up and itchy scalp. taking an anti histamine seems to calm it down. I've had things before that come and go away but this just seems to plague me. it feels like my body is attacking me from the inside out. Vic

hi. reason I ask is I have always suffered from hives. I also get palpitations. I have an auto immune disorder though and also have what was diagnosed as ibs but turned out to be gastritis and all are symptoms of my disorder. I take it the palpitations have been investigated? a simple ecg would rule out anything else. But also try a different anti histamine. Others may not have the same effect.

Hi. I have chronic hives due to temperature changes (hot and cold). I started by seeing an allergist/immunologist who began a treatment of H1 and H2 blockers. Both antihistamines are necessary. I did a trial of these with the end game of a miracle drug called Xolair. It is a shot that is taken once a month. I have been on it for about a year and a half. It is a game changer. I do not know what your insurance is like, but mine required months of trials of many different antihistamines. The shot is about $3,000 a month which is why there were so many hoops to jump through. My life has changed since I started these injections. When it gets close to time for a shot I do start to see some hiving, so I know it works. Good luck!

Wow! $3000 a shot! I do have a private insurance but I don't think it would cover that cost. I also think our NHS ( health service in the UK) would not since it is not a life threatening condition, Anyway I will explore this drug . Thank you Jules!
