Circumcision at 56

Hi I am a 56 year old male with mild phimosis. Having a circumcision tommorow.
Have had this problem for many years and likely should have resolved it in my 30s or 40s
Will not retract erect. Have to force it to retract flaccid which I do daily and clean. Have had balanatis, fissures and now some sort of firm white ring (almost scar tissue) Tried steroid creams. Seemed to help but it's all still tight - too tight. Have decided that is enough and will get this done.
Anyway, I pretty much need to be back to work in about a week after the procedure.
Job is semi manual. How much pain is there in the first 5 days? Did anyone have to lie down, or were you able to get up , walk around and have a coffee, watch TV etc. How bad is the sensitivity? Wee
e you able to do any lifting at all?
Also what do wear around the house-sitting loose or tight fitting? Kids are gone so it's just my wife and I. Finally, can you provide any insight on noticeable negative sexual issues resulting from the procedure. (Before, which in my case was about 35 years, to after )
Many thanks in advance to anyone who may be able to respond.

Hello Dave, I am a urologist just finishing my training. I would not recommend circumcision to any of my patients whatsoever. The head of your penis is called the glans. It's a mucosa which means after there's nothing there to protect itself it will dry up and callus. There are studies that show men who are circumcised have a 45 percent chance of getting erectile dysfunction if they are circumcised. There are plenty of reasons why not to do it and not very many to do it. In your condition and your eagerness to get it done I would recommend doing a partial circumcision
.this doesn't allow your glans to become callused because you still have a little foreskin to protect your glans. It also removes any chance of your phimosis of coming back, yes it's permanent. Getting fully circumcised will be the worst you can make. And it has a faster healing period if you go partial circumcision and yuou can get back to work within the week.
My patients are to be in bed for at least a week. It isn't that you get it removed and have a small cut. Your entire penis swells uncomfortably, the stitches catch on everything and rough materials touch yuour sensitive glans.
Partial circumcision just removes the part that gets tight. It has a quicker healing time, less swelling and overall best results.
Full circumcision is a lot more painful, swells more and erections cause searing pain.
I hope you choose what's best for you

Thank you very much for your response.
This is the type of insight I did not get from my doctor.
If I cancel this surgery in the morning, will there be reprecussions (I guess I should phrase that are there reprecussions generllay. For example, will the surgeon be so frustrated that he refused to see me again?) I appreciate that is a tough question. I guess the other question would be could I ask (at the surgery ward) for a partial
I appreciate these are odd questions, and I would like to thank you for addressing them
I am located in Canada.
Regards, David

Hi Dave, I'm not a doctor, but I too am very anti full circumcision. Your body is yours and no procedure can go ahead without your full consent on the day. Your doctor's ethical codes should allow you to change your mind - or at least delay things, without repercussions. Granted, doctors are human and may be a bit peeved, but they should have your physical and emotional needs as their first priority. I had a TURP cancelled by my Urologist on the morning of surgery (which I was glad about afterwards), so why shouldn't you the patient also have this right? ! There are alternatives to removal of the foreskin, though they take time and persistence. I've been impressed with Wee Dugie in his responses on this theme. He has a lot of experience. I haven't, I'm still intact and have only had a few problems from time to time with my foreskin. I feel very sorry for all circumcised men, especially those who lost their forsekin at birth. I think this is a Human Rights issue.

I think I am going to call and cancel and then attempt to follow up with the surgeon in his office within the next month rather than trying to negotiate on the surgical ward.
Not sure how that will go
Thanks again for your comments

I've had patients cancel on surgeries. People get scared and people change their mind last minute. It happens! If your doctor didn't tell you about those issues that come with circumcision I would advise that you see another doctor. Hell, I was circumcised as an infant and had so many issues with it. I just had surgery 3 days ago to remove a cancerous tumor on my circumcision scar. I never had kids because it caused me to become sterile and didn't have sex until I was in my middle 20s because they removed too much skin. These types of complications are very real but almost no one hears about them because some people can't handle the truth or choose to cover them up.
