Hi all im new to this.
I have been struggling recently. I was very ill with covid in march and april. However as i started to recover i was getting serious anxiety. So my doctor put me on citalapram 20 mg. Fast forward to early last week and i ran out of citalapram and thought i can do this cold turkey i dont need it big mistake. Thursday i was back on phone to doctor and got more citalapram. Now i feel nauseas waves and have had an upset stomach. Can stopping citalapram for 4 days then starting it again really do this. Also can side effects start days after starting the meds. Im in abit of a pickle as i tested positive 2 times then negative 2 times for covid last week and my anxiety is through the roof and i keep thinking that i am going to be very ill again. thanks

Hi Alex, I'm sorry you're going through side effects right now. You are going to be absolutely fine, no matter how afraid you feel right now, you'll get through it just like you have in the past 💪
Now, I'm not a medical professional but I have 3 years experience on Citalopram and struggled with side effects at first, so I know how awful that increased anxiety can feel, and I'd imagine the thoughts about Covid returning are not helping! But you will feel better soon. These side effects pass. And if you want to come off Citalopram you can then do it safely 😃
Absolutely it can make you feel nauseous. If you take a look in the box, the leaflet should give you a list of the most common side effects. Nausea is one of them. I notice side effects if I miss a day. And when I tapered down last year, I noticed side effects while I adjusted.
In my experience, yes. During the first 6 weeks on Citalopram, I had a range of side effects that kicked in at different stages. For example the increased anxiety and sweating was during the first week. The second week I completely lost my appetite. Then I spent a few weeks zoning out. But they should all pass.
I doubt your side effects will last too long because it's been only 4 days, and Citalopram takes a week to fully leave your system, so you wont have much readjusting to do, if that makes sense.
I recommend eating some dry foods to help with the nausea, just nibbling if you can. Try apps like Headspace to help calm your nerves. Distract yourself with lighthearted TV like comedy. And if you feel like you need support don't be afraid to call Mind of Samaritans to talk to someone. Sometimes just speaking to another human can help our anxiety calm down.
I found this guide really helpful when I started these meds too. https://www.nomorepanic.co.uk/showthread.php?46980-Citalopram-survival-guide. And this site has tons of free help for anxiety and panic https://cbt4panic.org/
I hope you start to feel better soon.
