Citalopram 20mg for 6 weeks

Hi, I have been taking Citalopram 20mg for six weeks for Anxiety.

My main symtoms are waking every morning with what feels like a really bad hangover without drinking which will last all day, had all the test you can think of and finally was given Citalopram but after 6 weeks I'm still struggling.

Is it to early to make a call on changing dose or finding an alternative.

Any advise would be much appreciated.

Yes absolutely - way too early.  It can be at least 3 months before you even notice any tiny changes, and even then you won't be free of anxiety - that will come though.  Took me 6 months to recover on 20mg.

      Hi,

      Thank you for your reply.

I'm going to stick with it and hopefully get some relief from this constant hung over feeling, fingers crossed I too can recover at the six month stage.

Pity the GP's do not have the user knowledge.

I have a review in 3 weeks and have been told if my symtoms have not cleared by then he will look at increasing the dose or an alternative, as I should have seen an improvement by then.

I think just reading a lot of posts on this forum I will ask to stay on 20mg and wait it out.

Thanks for taking time out to reply

A bigger dose won’t necessarily make you recover any quicker either - as you see Lois recovered on 10mg and for me it was 20mg.  Some people need a bigger dose, some smaller.  Whatever dose you take you’ll still go through the same process and probably the same time too.  Each dose is personal for each persons own individual body size and makeup, and I always say why take more than you need?

It can be a bumpry road and there’ll be lots of ups and downs and sometimes you’ll feel like you’ve gone backwards - that’s completely normal.  Yes unfortunately lots of doctors don’t appreciate the recovery process on these meds though there’s equally manu super doctors who understand vast amounts about them.

Just stick to them - and remember just because you don’t see any recovery signs doesn’t mean you’re not getting better.  You are.  The meds work silently in the background - so it can be confusing.

Patience, perseverance and chatting on here - you’ll get there.

Many thanks for the feedback, it will be worth the wait to feel my old self again.

I will keep chatting on here, certainly helps.

Yes, too early:-) It takes 6-8 weeks to get the full effectiveness of the medication, and you're just entering that stage now.

?If, at the 3 month mark, you aren't feeling any improvement, then I would visit your doctor and talk about a possible dosage increase.

Hi Matt, did the doctor start you on 20mg or 10mg?

      Hi, I started on 20mg.

Been quite I'll for about twelve months prior with brain fog, dizziness and a constant hangover feeling, but I assume anxiety effects people in different ways

Hi Matt, your system will settle soon, hang in there. I was going to respond to starting straight on 20mg, then saw your other replies so no need.

    Matt,

It’s way to early for you. Hang in there it’s a slow process sometimes you don’t notice the little improvements. Make a daily journal. I have and when I look back I say wow I was in a real poor state and I compare to the current day and that’s when I notice the changes. I’m on week 15 at 10mg.  I still have a way to go but I’m so much better. Any questions please ask and keep us posted. Be patient.😇😇
