Citalopram 40mg

Posted , 3 users are following.

Hi I've been on Citalopram for about 5 weeks, started by my mental health team.

I started out on 10mg then 20, 30 now on 40mg. My anxiety is still crippling me, dark thoughts. Feeling of hopelessness.

Does it get any better?

40mg?? why?? you only been on citalopram for 5 weeks? meaning that you did not have enough time for the most common therapeutic dose which is 20mg to work. It is completely normal you are feeling absolutely overwhelmed with side effects and horrible anxiety, dark thoughts. You should have just stayed on 20mg for at least 2 months, it is not a quick fix and it takes a long time for the medication to work combined with therapy. I personally did not feel any improvements for at least 2 months after starting both times I went on citalopram, second time round taking even longer to work. There is hope, even though it does not feel like that, you will feel better, you need to allow enough time for this medication to work. I am just wondering why they have given you such a high dose so quick. 40mg is the highest dose possible.

    Agree with Sima

40mg within 5 weeks is quite high too soon. No wonder you’re feeling not so good.

You won’t get better any quicker on 40mg than you would on 20mg - its not about ‘the more the better’ but its about what dose suits your particular body, and you won’t know that until you’ve given each dose a good few months each.

Anxiety takes a long time to recover from - could be 6 months, could be less or more. Generally people take many, many months.

Yes it does get better, but medicine is not an overnight fix, and throughout your recovery you’ll be up and down until you finally feel well.

The more you try and rush recovery the worse you’ll feel. Slow down.

Should I reduce my dose back down? I should discuss with my GP ?
