Citalopram and Low Libido

Posted , 2 users are following.

I was on citalopram for a few years and at varying doses - but felt well and comfortable enough to come off it in 2018

In 2020, I had a catastrophic relapse and went back on to 20 then 30mg.

I was mainly alright, but recently things became almost unmanageable again, so my GP has increased them to 40mg and I am 1 week into my new dose.

I'm getting some side effects, but they are to be expected.

What is most distressing is my complete lack of libido - the thought of sex makes me panicky, and just don't want it at all.

My mind races and starts to think that I don't fancy my wife and that must be the real reason (I am pretty certain that is not the case if it wasn't for the medication)

Is this normal? Has anyone else had this? Is my libido coming back?

    Hi

SSRI's are notoriously known for their influence on libido I'm afraid, so yes its definitely the meds. Anxiety also makes you think anxiously and again once you're better you'll think differently too. It doesn't affect everyone, but the majority it does. Its best to wait until you feel well and then you may find a lower dose will correct the issue - it often does.

      Thank you.

I know everything you've said is correct, but this illness really plays cruel tricks on you - it is one of the worst things about it.

      Fingers Crossed it comes back.

It does play cruel tricks ..... not only the illness but then the medicine can give you unwanted side effects too, especially at first 😦 Maybe speak to your doctor if there's something he can recommend to help, and maybe lower your dose in time once you're feeling better.
