Hi Laura, sorry to hear you're struggling. Are you taking Propranolol still with the Citalopram.?Headaches are a side effect of Citalopram but can also be caused by the Propranolol. The trouble when you mix meds is that you don't know what's causing what. I personally would stop the Propranolol before stopping the Citalopram as the Citalopram is a long term solution for anxiety, whereas the Propranolol gives relief short term only as taken, like a Benzodiazapine. Have a chat with your Dr. I think they would probably agree. Take care.

hi Ian thank you for your reply, funnily enough I thought it may have been the propanolol causing the headaches. I haven’t taken it for two days and the headaches have gone away and I’m just getting a mild pain now and then from the side-effects of the citalopram. I’m day 14 of the Citalopram today and I’m feeling much better. However I am still getting aches and pains now and that Citalopram today and I’m feeling much better. However I am still getting aches and pains now and then around my body but i can deal with that. hope you are well x

I'm coming up to 12 weeks since I increased my medication and I've been having terrible muscle aches and pains,so much so I stopped exercises and running and it's been getting me down. I've experienced this as well on other meds, it's caused by the increase in Serotonin and anxiety. Had it on my lower dosage and it almost went at around 12 weeks and then I doubled the dosage and obviously it's back with a vengeance. Not so bad today and I'm hoping it lessens soon. It's these really bothersome side effects that makes you feel like stopping, swapping or going back to the Dr.,but sooner or later they do go or greatly lessen and everything evens out. Can take a very long time and we have to be patient, unfortunately patience is the one thing we don't have when anxiety is raging. Take care.

sounds like you have been through the mill. 12 weeks in now though so hopefully they will start to subside for you more each day. When you were on the tablets before How long did it take for the side-effects to calm down and for you to feel like you could start doing things normally again? I’m off work at the moment and I’m absolutely dreading going back any advice?

Everyone is different and people's circumstances as well, but it takes me around 12 weeks for a lot of the heightened anxiety and side effects to settle down, the improvement continues from there. I used to start meds and taper off while still going to work, but then I fell seriously ill and had to stay off for a long time,so I know how you feel. The trouble then is you get anxious and worry about returning, and that doesn't help at all. Do they do a phased return where you work? That's what happened to me and it was a big help. Also I took Hydroxyzine to calm me just before I returned, but you can't take it with Citalopram any more or I would have suggested that. I would try to go back though sooner rather than later because it gets harder and harder the longer you stay off. It's not easy I know.

I was taking Hydroxyzine 10mg with 30 mg Citalopram 10 years ago. Went back on Citalopram 2 years ago and asked if I could have Hydroxyzine again and he said no. This is because Citalopram and Hydroxyzine can cause something called QT prolongation and it is advised not to take the two together. I would recheck with your Dr. just in case.
