Citalopram for 4 weeks, still feeling worse than before

Hello,

I've now been on citalopram for 4 weeks (2 weeks 5mg and 2 weeks 10mg) and I'm still feeling more anxious and more low than before taking it. I've taken Citalopram before, but this time it's a bigger struggle to get on them, it seems. I'm still feeling as bad as the first couple days of taking the meds and am wondering whether it's just not agreeing with me this time around. Really don't know whether to stop them or carry on at this point. I know it's still early days in taking the meds, but my worry and low mood is significantly worse than prior to taking the medication, so should I be putting myself through this any more?

Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks.

hi. the second time round always seems to be harder to adjust for an awful lot of people. it's horrible but it will pass and a lot of people have recovered really well a second time on citalopram. it sometimes can take longer the second time round too but not always by much. they have worked for you before so there's no reason they wont work again. the first 4-6 weeks are always worse for me mood wise. they definitely make you feel worse before better that's not unheard of.

keep going everything you have said is pretty normal. you will get their 😊

Thanks for the message. I've decided to carry on with the medication. Technically I've only been on 10mg for a little over 2 weeks, and although my worries are worse, I feel I need to give it more time seen as these meds have worked for me in the past.

Yes, definitely keep going and give it another few weeks I'd say. Its to early to quit, but usually the feeling of quitting is when your at your peak side effects wise so in the next 2-3 weeks you should see some improvement if you now stay on the 10mg. An increase in dose can sometimes set you back a bit so stick it out and you will start to feel better soon.
